I've stopped by the one in SOMA and if I recall correctly, they have games on their large screens. But it definitely looks like a more Chipotle version of Taco Bell. Pretty funny to me.

Also, Dusty Knapp sounds like a made up name.

If Cal students are willing to frequent chain food they get what they deserve.

Students care more about what will have to come out of their pockets than if the food is actually good. The on-campus food has always been lousy, I doubt Taco Bell is worse. Better than Top Ramen anyway.

TB and restaurant cannot be used in the same sentence!

A Taco Bell with alcohol? I wonder what wine pairs well with a Beefy Crunch Burrito.

This is a huge development. Top Dog vs. Taco Bell with beer on game days.

From the link, http://anewscafe.com/2016/05/25/partiers-trash-shasta-lake-forest-service-cleans-up-the-mess/

Quote:

Five things differentiate the cantina model from a traditional Taco Bell, company representatives say: a new style of decor, localized artwork, an open kitchen, open plating and shareable dishes.
The Berkeley franchisee is trying to secure a liquor license so that location may serve beer and wine.

Among the shareable new menu items planned for the post-5 p.m. crowd are chile-cheese nachos and platter of three rolled tacos ($3 each); homestyle nachos and mini quesadilla with salsa, guacamole and sour cream ($4 each); and chicken tenders with dipping sauces and platter of six rolled tacos ($5 each).

This may be a substitute for Beat the Clock since that is no longer at the "new" Bears Lair?

They opened a "drunk" Taco Bell near Telephone Co Park in SF. Police and other agencies rejected the request for a liquor or beer/wine license...so it's really just a fancy TB. I'd expect the same for Berkeley given the students.

Taco Bell knows their target demographics. The 24-hour Taco Bell at ASU is the top grossing TB in the country.

La Burrita has little to fear.
one La Burrita grilled chicken burrito (including free tortilla chips) costs about the same as 2 or 3 Taco Bell grilled chicken tacos and provides a heck of a lot better meal.

I hear they're getting the liquor license.

Also, Pappy's had a Beat The Clock sign this weekend.

Are you saying Taco Bell opens these "Cantinas" not knowing whether they'll get the liquor license? Sounds very un-chain-business-like to gamble like that, even if things are likely to work out OK either way.....

My Hall of Fame Mexican restaurant was the long defunct El Sombrero Cafe on 23rd and Geary in SF. The Margaritas were made with fresh squeezed limes.

Could be...expect heavy duty card checking.

That's what happened in SF. It was their second "Cantina" and I think near TeleCo Park was pretty damn smart. There's a big lunch crowd in the area and plenty of people will stop before or after a game...but they didn't figure on the alc license. SFPD's logic is it's a zoo down there.

What I want to know about is the furniture in the Cantinas. It's a urban myth now but supposedly fast food joint's furniture is comfortable for about 15-20 minutes...then it starts to hurt and people leave. If you want people to stick around and drop $$$, has to be comfortable.

To be fair, Gordo's and LaBu are simply mediocre to bad Mexican joints. Taco Bell is in its own category of south west inspired junk food (now with booze).

Go to the new Sinaloa taco/burritos shop on Telegraph for decent tacos next to campus.

Yeah baby, Murica!

LINK: Taco Bell now wrapping tacos in fried chicken

Quote:

In its continued efforts to reinvent the taco shell, Taco Bell is now producing a chalupa wrapped in fried chicken.

They call it the Naked Chicken Chalupa, which is the latest in Taco Bell's string of weird taco shells, which have included a Doritos shell and a waffle-wrapped breakfast taco.

Funny but some of most snobbish foodies of Mexican food I know, seem to also have this guilty pleasure of liking the 2 tacos for $.99 deal at Jack in the Box. I'd have to agree. I have no idea what that meat is, but at 2 a.m. it is the best thing ever.

I enjoy those. But I also understand that they're a whole different thing.

There's a few high-powered chefs in the "like" category. I like the tacos and onion rings.

Of course -- goes without saying! Again, a guilty pleasure haha.
