Don't understand how Cal ever benefits from playing SJSU home or away, but rumor is the road game will be cancelled at SJSU's request.

I can see the obvious reasons why we wouldn't want to play in San Jose, but what exactly are the reasons they "can't afford to host" us? Additional security, parking attendants, staffers?? I wonder if this is just a more palpable way of saying Cal is pressuring them into dropping it because Cal won't actually go there.

No doubt agreements have buyouts and gate guarantees. Makes no sense for SJSU to enter into home and homes if they can't hold up their guarantee.

Given the first game in Berkeley and a sizable gap in the return game, seems pretty clear Bears were either planning to cancel the return game or thought SJSU might bail.

Bears' ideal schedule would be a home/home with a national P5, a home game vs Davis, Sac State, or Cal Poly, and SDSU, UNLV, Colorado State/Air Force, BYU, or Hawaii.

Preferably at Hawaii, but looks like that ship has sailed for the foreseeable future.

It's inconvenient when the Spartans beat us, but I'd like to see a periodic rivalry like with UC Davis. Play SJStU every 3 years. Sparta takes on the $Big Boys -- tOSu, Iowa Stu, $uSC, Farm, and UO...and didn't they play the $Tide recently?

It makes more sense than playing Presbyterian College, Southern Utah at Cedar City or Southeastern Ohio Wesleyan where we can't even sell out the miserable $5 hot dogs let alone fill CMS.

Grambling brought its great band. Schedule them again.

I would be totally open for filling up the C slot with in-state schools.

Who's bothered by playing a game at San Jose State, losing over there would be disastrous but losing at home to such a team would be apocalyptic (see Nevada 2012). The issue that negates this is the fact that Spartan Stadium only holds 30,456 which is way too damn small, so playing a game over there is not feasible barring major expansion. It's not remote like Martin Stadium where having small capacity is not a big deal.

Play Spartie at Levi's in Santa Clara.

Good idea, except that the 49ers would probably charge too much to make it pay.

Levi's is a shiny yet very unimpressive venue. It's like its surroundings, sure those office parks are probably a big deal, but they look blah and no one ever wants to be there unless they have to. Let's never play there again unless it's the P12 Championship game.

My two cents is I don't think this was ever a real home and away game. I think SJSU and Cal scheduled it as such as a way for SJSU to save face. The idea that SJSU is "requesting" the cancellation just adds weight to that theory. Cal is definitely writing a check for not playing this game down there.

Levi's is a lah-dee-dah boutique stadium 60k max? If you make the tiks affordable you'd put 40k Spartie butts in the seats. Let there be beer. How many Bears?

Look at the conversation that going4roses linked in his reply. It's right there on the screen:

Quote:

-USC wants to play us any year we can find a schedule opening and will pay us at least $1.2M or greater TBD

If hosting Cal costs SJSU a shot at a $1.2 million payday vs. USC, then SJSU literally can't afford to host Cal.

Seems obvious to me.

No way. We have a $300M stadium that we need to use as much as possible rather than making the rich 49ers owners even richer.

SJSU gets around 15,000 for its home games. Cal fans aren't motivated by that venue either.

Cal fans aren't motivated to travel to Santa Clara/San Jose? That's where they're finding employment. Or do you mean playing at Spartan Stadium doesn't have the image of the Big Time CFB...like playing WSu in Pullman, WA?

Well then let Spartie play $uSC in the Coliseum. It's a win-win. We can fill CMS hosting Western Kentucky CC at Paducah, KY. Maybe they'll bring their marching cheer leaders and their loose straps band. Go Xyktvgnms!

Previous "home" games at Levi and Candlestick had disappointing turnouts. We'd make more money playing UC Davis at home

By then Cal should be a 9-10 win a season team

Or we can play SJ at Cal, like we're doing?

SDSU is holding the best OOC scheduling hand in the West. Everybody in the West wants to recruit in SD, it's not a regular stop in the PAC, and an NFL stadium lets them make calculated risks on guarantees. Can schedule homes and homes favorably. They are hosed if the Chargers flee to LA since SD won't prop up the Murph just for SDSU football and bowl games.

Davis and Sac State are underrated since everyone in the PAC North plus the LA schools recruits in Sac. Cal Poly's in a tiny market, but they're an attractive home patsy at the right price.

SJSU and the Fresnecks are hosed. PAC schools already have Bay Area exposure and a pissant stadium doesn't support home and homes. FSU draws better, but doesn't produce enough recruits. Both have to whore themselves out for body bag pay days because they don't have any scheduling leverage.

Scheduling Fresno made sense during the days when college football was only noon kickoffs and some away games required a radio, but in the age of superconferences and big TV deals, better to schedule a major-OOC.

Cal OOC schedule looks pretty solid between 2016 and 2021 (one game TBD). Only questionable picks are Weber State and Idaho State (Sac State would be better) and SJSU (Colorado State would be better).

Home and home vs CSu would be excellent, and fans would love Ft Collins, CO. Go Jackalopes!

Setting something up with CSU once their new campus stadium is complete would be smart. Would also love to play more service academies.

Surprised Bears have never played UNLV. Only previous CSU series was 2 for 1.

Have seen games in Annapolis and Colorado Springs, both awesome settings. AR lit up AFA when Marshawn and Forsett were froskies. Love to see a game at West Point. Sandy had s series set up with Navy that fell through.
