I wish him success. It's been a very long journey for him.

FBS, gets to stay in CA, games “near” family and friends, Eric Kiseau assistant HC / OC...

If I recall correctly, the Bulldogs started four QBs in 2015, and their leading passer connected 47% of the time. He is apparently gone, and was to be a junior this year. The QB toward the end of the season should also be a junior in 2016… The QB to beat seems to be Chason Virgil. Looks like he played the first three games as a true freshman. Broken collarbone I heard. Had some pretty good offers...

Fresno State had their worst season last year in 20+ years. In 2015 they were the 123rd most experienced team in FBS...

First game is in Nebraska.

Best to Kline.

That I didn't know, thank you. About eight years pre-Kiine at Cal, but a Cal connection...

Of course, the post says 'could go' so it's not a done deal.

Gotta hand it to Kline for his persistence. He's managed to use his few years of eligibility to see a wide spectrum of the academic universe. I hope he's picked up some education along the way. Another nomadic QB, Jake heaps, is still hanging around with the Seahawks but he did have a somewhat fuller college resume than Kline can present. Still, he's establishing a lot of future contacts if he wants to ultimately pursue a coaching career.

Kid should invest in a Winnebago.

Good luck, Kline! Hope life settles in a bit for ya.

If Kline has his Cal degree, and it's in a subject he either enjoyed or he can use to his advantage, he wins. I hope he has a solid "after football" plan.

Yeah, "like a rolling stone" doesn't work out for elite QB's out of high school. Heaps had parenting issues, Zach maybe suffered from Wanderlust...... Wish the kid well and hope he sets anchor soon...........

Thanks BBinLA. I think it was figured that the medical redshirt would be granted. Good for him, and actually, probably good for Kline too in his last bid to start...

I had been wanting to check, and just remembered... A discussion on their board:

Good catch ... kind of an underwhelming response, many clapping with one hand, with much concern about the development of recruited QBs being suppressed by one-n-done's.

I suppose if Kline gets playing time, there will be posts here about Fresno State scores ... wonder if any here miss the reports about the football fortunes of Butte that we used to get. How is Butte football progressing? The wanderings of the long-ago 'shirt QB continues.
Onward and upward, Zach.

Just re-watched his "2 Minute Drill" interview. His character and enthusiasm comes through. Has always struck me as a great young man. Wishing him all the best.

I hope he blows the doors off down there. He's managed to meet his goals save one. Being under center for the year in a D1 program. Go get em Zach!!

I was hoping they'd play SJSU in San Jose this upcoming season, but nope. Quite a few of their games are televised...

First things first, as someone said earlier, this needs to be made official... then, he needs to get the nod to start. Simply being the best out there, if that is indeed the case, does not always equate to winning the starting job, as there are other dynamics and competing factors, most quite valid ones too. I hope the chips fall the right way for Kline this time...

"First things first"........Zach acknowledged he did not do the film work that Jared did while they were together. It appears that that is still a difference between the two. Zach is the most enthusiastic and likeable guy you could run across, but has only a short time left to move forward. One more opportunity...................I wish Zach the best.

He learned something dinan3, and admitted to it as well, openly. From what we've heard several times, Jared's pop, with his MLB background and related experiences was quite helpful in Jared's grooming and preparations...

When Kline's sister got married sometime back, long after he left Cal, he was watching film during an opportune time on the wedding day. I sense that he truly gets that the importance of that now...

Reflecting back, when I came to Cal I somehow thought I could get straight A's there too, with the same approach as HS, which included watching Carson and Letterman every night. A big ass wake-up was soon to follow...

The character-building of Zach's journey will serve him well, on the field and off.

In his quest to be a QB, Zach has been to Berkeley, Chico, Terre Haute, Berkeley and now Fresno. That man deserves a break. Go Zach and Go Bears!

Agreed. I imagine Kline had other opportunities, including ones where it would have been more of a given that he'd start, but as stated earlier, this is an FBS program and one in California, between family and friends in the Bay Area and SoCal. He gets to reunite with OC Kiseau as well. The QB situation is quite open, and their Spring Game further confirmed the need there...

Fresno is likely not the favorite place of many, but compare that to his other stops, relatively speaking, this is a markedly better opportunity. I'll say it again, Kudos to SD for accepting Kline back onto the football team, and allowing him to compete. He shined over the Spring, including the Spring Game. IMO, he doesn't get this opportunity in Fresno without the snaps and performance this past Spring. SD went a step further, and spoke glowingly of Zach. As I understand it, there was never a beef between SD and Kline years back, to the contrary actually. Head-butting was with the OC then...

I imagine Fresno's young QB stud Chason Virgil can't be happy about bringing-in a grad transfer QB. There might be some dynamics going-on behind closed doors that can still complicate things for Zach...

Ha! Same here... I look back and I thought I knew everything, but I didn't know squat. Now, decades later, I know so much more, and yet, I'm still a fool in so many ways.

Decades from now, look out, baby: I'm gonna be one wise old man!

Best of luck to Zach Kline, in any event. I thought he showed a lot during his second stint here, albeit brief.

Has any other cal football player ever been discussed as much as Kline has with as little impact on the field as he's had?

Excellent question ... and how much above zero has his impact on the field in real games been, at Cal, or even on his journeys.

If so, I can't think of any UCBG...

I'm sure much of "this" has to do with a combo of factors, such as being a highly-touted prospect to begin with, being 100% Cal, not taking other trips, enrolling early, helping to bring-in other highly sought after talent, all of the dynamics of the JT / SD timeframe, his unique journey which brought him back, earning a Cal degree...

His persistence and determination to see a dream realized is something for which I very much admire, have lived it myself, and teach my little ones, as I've even shared with Kline. At some point, no matter what happens ultimately, he can look into the mirror and know full well that he did everything seemingly possible to make it happen. IMO, that is huge; and never tantamount to failure.

Sitting at a desk job will be there, if desired, additional studies too. The Cal degree is forever, that arm is not...

Go Zach, and Go Bears!

Great summation of what I see as the reasons 89. While he's yet to show it on the field (1 year at Butte JC) in D1, his spirit and outlook has never wavered that I've seen, and I'll always pull for someone who gives his all on and off the field.

He is our Rudy. His significance is far greater than his time on the field.

Kline helped greatly in recruiting and bringing in a very talented class with him. So in that way, he had a big effect on the field.

A few things to comment on, and I'll probably miss one or two...

Rudy was a walk-on of the extreme variety, Kline a highly prized recruit. Kline left once. He graduated, and was officially gone due to such. With the post-Webb input from the staff, decided it best to enroll at a grad program elsewhere....

If you want. For me he is a guy who persevered through adversity, who never gave up on his dream - who I love to root for.
