It is an interesting 3 part podcast - lots of material and points up for discussion and debate. I wish Gladwell would have gone deeper into proving his point about the US economy being a "weak link" type of system - that would have made his arguments more robust.

And the Furd interview was spliced together to be a little overly dramatic, but I always appreciate the UC love wherever it comes.

Yeah, but Malcolm Gladwell couldn't touch McCaffrey in the open field.

Maybe if he practiced for 10,000 hours.

Man, that was a great endorsement for the mission of public universities, especially Cal and her 9 little sisters. I wonder how often UC fundraisers use this pitch to big donors.

It's great to see a public smart endorsement of top public education.
Wish more politicians and people of wealth and power made this a top priority!

Can someone paraphrase what he said?

He could catch him in a little longer race. Malcolm is a good distance runner.

TLDR (or really TLDL): Donating to well off Universities with huge endowments (Ivy League, Furd, etc) is a bad idea since your ROI is very small compared to donating to a University that isn't well funded where you will effect change where it's needed most (among less privileged citizens) and get the biggest bang for the buck.

Others can feel free to add. I'd highly recommend listening to all 3 parts.

(Part 1 of 3) 7/6/16 - Carlos Doesn't Remember
(Part 2 of 3) 7/13/16 - Food Fight
(Part 3 of 3) 7/20/16 - My Little Hundred Million

Note Part 3 of 3 7/20/16 had the Furd and UC subject matter.

I've been listening to Revisionist History since it launched. This three part series starting with Carlos Doesn't Remember is truly superb, but veers a bit off the history theme of the general podcast series. For something that is equally good and more about the past, I would recommend the Saigon episode on intelligence reporting and RAND. (Though really you should listen to this three-part episode in whole as well)

Gladwell's promo for his latest podcast: "The greatness of Henry Rowan and the moral bankruptcy of Stanford U."

I attended a presentation of the "current political and social status" of the Cal campus sponsored by the class of '68 (not mine) on June 4th. One fact mentioned was that the current level of public funded support to Cal is 11%. While more than I had thought, I am still amazed that the broad brush designation of "public" is applied to us. It seems to me "privately supported, with limited public assistance" is closer to the mark.
