Stephanie was a flag bearer but Farida was not. Her name was mentioned by Hoda Kotb (parent born in Egypt) as a former teammate of Missy Franklin.

Farida didn't participate in the opening ceremony since she is racing today. Already advanced to tonight's semi finals in the 100 Fly along with Dana Vollmer. Noemie Thomas (Canada) missed making the semis.

Was Hoda the one who kept saying that the parade of nations seemed out of order because of the Portuguese alphabet?
It would be shameful if it was Meredith Vieira who is of Portuguese (Azorean) ancestry. The problem is the Portuguese
language has non-English names for many places in the world; the language uses the Latin(Roman) alphabet, but not all letters are used by the language.
Notably the letter "Z" I wonder if the next 17 days NBC realizes that they are not in the nation of "Brazil", the Portuguese do not use the letter "Z".
The correct name is "Brasil". The largest nation in South America with a five letter name and we can't spell it correctly. No matter, they
probably just think we're idiots anyway.

That missing "Z" is key for EEO to keep from counting the Portuguese as Hispanics.Consider the name 'Lopez' in Spanish the Z makes you Hispanic; in Portuguese the same
name is Lopes (no Z's allowed) and you cannot be counted as Hispanic. During Hispanic heritage month at work we would celebrate Hispanic Heritage month
and acknowledge the contributions from Spain and Portugal, but then they would only count those of Spanish heritage. When I asked why the Hispanic
Portuguese were not included; my performance evaluation would show that I was not supportive of EEO practices. Fought and tilted that windmill for 36 years,
then retired.

FWIW My grandparents were from the same 'islas portuguesas del atlantico' as Vieira's.

Most populace country in North America and those silly Brazilians can't come remotely close to spelling our name right. Estados Unidos da America? Sheesh, they only got one word right. The others aren't even close!

English has a Z. Brazil is spelled with a z in English. We aren't any more idiots for not spelling the name as spelled in the native tongue as we are for "misspelling" Germany, Spain, or China. Or for non English speaking countries spelling United States differently

I'm just being honest. Frankly, it depends where they seed him. With his qualifying time he should get a bye into the seeded rounds. For some reason there are a bunch of countries who get athletes into the 100m that are well below the standard for qualifying (10.18), so there are I believe 4 heats where the typical winner is in the 10.50-60's, so if JB gets placed there he will get two events. The next stage is where you are going against bolt and others of his talent, so qualifying will be around 10.20 or better, and sometimes much better.

I misunderstood your question, and started some long post talking about the manner of qualifying - quick summary, if a country doesn't have an athlete with a qualifying mark (10.16) then they can submit a single representative. Those non-qualifiers compete in the "preliminaries." It will be four rounds with top 2 in each heat automatically qualifying along with next two fastest overall. They qualify for the First Round, which includes everyone that hit an Olympic qualifying time previously (including Jahvid).

As to your actual question ... that depends I guess, but the simple answer is that typically the best guys are getting faster, if only because they are holding back during the rounds in order to conserve energy. If you only need to get first/second in your heat, there's no need to try to break a world record. Anecdotally World Records almost always happen in the finals however, so people are getting faster for a number of reasons (adrenaline, competition, etc.)

At one point in my career, I programmed the EEO/AA reports. I asked specifically why Portuguese were not counted anywhere. The answer that came back was that there were not enough of them to qualify as a 'protected group'.

Following an Art Hoppe column at the time, I also asked how we would know if a person was Black. Hoppe claimed that to define Black was in itself stereotyping and couldn't be done. The head of EEO was kind of steamed and got out the official guidelines:
A Black person was 'someone descended from the Black racial groups of Africa'. The only defining characteristic in the guideline was to carve out blacks from Puerto Rico or the Caribbean. The head of EEO was not amused.

Jahvid got a bye into the first round. He's running in heat 7 today in lane 8. In lane 6: Usian Bolt. His race is in about an hour, scheduled for 8:36am pst.

IF you have infinity you can see it on your TV. Press The letter "C" the red button on your remote Xfinity control and it will take you to the internet on your TV. Select Rio and the menu of events are on the right. Most of the events are shown live via the internet. Don't know if the other TV services provide the same service. That was able to watch the swimming events live.

So far lots of people going sub 10.16 or little above and not even automatic qualifying. Anyone knows how many qualifiers they will take to the next round (24?)?.

8 rounds, top 2 from each heat auto qualify, then next fastest 8 non automatic qualifiers.

thanks. Actually when I say rounds, meant - heats, quarters, semis, and finals (4).
Vandalus
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It's rounds, semi's, finals. At the semi level, they take top 2 plus next 2 fastest, so only 8 make it thru to the finals.
Vandalus

Jahvid ran slower than his PR, did not make it thru. No word yet on his final time. Bolt walked the field with ease.
Vandalus

Jahvid ran a 10.39 for 7th place in his heat.
