Thanks Phoneixfive. I will be in Sydney early in the week so I will check on Friday night events and post what I hear. I will get there early Saturday to check the Tialgate scene. I wil be writing an article for Stadium Journey and my own college football blog on the whole day.

Hi Dan,
I'll be there! I recently posed a similar question and didn't get any responses, so not really sure what's going on. I'm curious about whether there's a Friday night event around town or an official/unofficial tailgate on Saturday morning. In any case, I'll plan to get to ANZ fairly early and see what's going on.

Amusingly, someone from Cal just told me that they are having a devil of a time organizing a "tailgate" with their local partner. Apparently the concept just doesn't exist in Australia. They keep responding with "why don't you all just drink after the game?" It's odd because the Aussies don't exactly have the rep of being a bunch of teetotalers. Cal has told them that "post game can be too depressing" - hopefully not the case this time.

Aussies know how to get ready for a 'football' game or at least for Australian Rules Football. I was there for 3 months in the early 80's for a 'Joint Research Program' with the Aussie Telecom equivalent to the old Bell Telephone Labs and became a 'tub thumping' Magpies Fan. Those games were really Fun and something of an ordeal. BTW, You could bring in all the beer You could handle 'by Yourself' in terms of weight.

Here you go. Don't think I've ever done a "joint tailgate" with the opposing team but there's a first time for everything.

Thanks for posting this, have just purchased two tickets. Making the short flight up (compared to you guys) from Melbourne with my wife to see the game. I watched a game at the Rose Bowl in 2000 and have been quite hooked since. I enjoy following the game from afar and was stoked to hear that it was coming to Oz. I own a Cal cap....so that makes me a Cal fan right?

If you bought your travel package through GET, the Cal-Hawaii official tailgate is already included as part of the package.
I was dumb and didn't read the fine print of the GET package, so even though I bought through there, I also bought an extra ticket directly yesterday on the registration link to the Cal-Hawaii tailgate.
LOL. I guess I can consider that an additional $60 donation to the Cal athletic department. :headbang:facepalm

First post so please dont kill me.
(disclaimer)--I built this account to see what Cal fans were doing tailgate wise...
I am actually a Hawaii fan going to the game and we were having the same issues with the game promoter about the pregame tailgate. I was specifically asked go check whats the chatter online about this and that is why I am here. Apparently it is true that Australians do not tailgate. Apparently they frown upon drinking outdoors prior to games as well.
That said, the promoter had it set up that there was going to be a Hawaii-Gate and a Cal-Gate in the same outdoor location and separated by barriers. They were charging essentially $40 USD for a fruit cup, juice/soft drink, and a McMuffin type of breakfast sandwich. Not a buffet and included was a "Coors Lager" (as they call it). There were no chairs or tables so pretty much fans would need to hold their plates and mill about outdoors. It is also winter and there was no cover from the elements. This arrangement did not sit well with both schools game organizers.
The promoter was asked time and time again about the pre game tailgates (from both schools) and he had the communication skills of a rock. Hawaii admin was worried. Cal admin was livid (what I was told). In addition when the promoter was asked about tickets there was little to no response. There was some time in which Hawaii fans were if they had to get their tickets at Will-Call at the Stadium. It got to the point that both schools were communicating with one another on a regular basis trying to work with the promoter and ultimately from the tailgate perspective both schools decided to cut the promoter loose and work together on the current arrangement which is linked above. Is it pricey? yes some say it is, but it does include an all you can stuff your face with and even local Australian delicacies. It is going to be held basically on the floor of a small arena with chairs, tables and protection from the potential cold/wet weather.
Our school didn't even have their charter flight and hotel rooms booked for the team and support staff until a month out and throughout the duration the communication between the schools and the promoter was one-sided. A few years ago Hawaii's athletic department got scammed by a promoter promoting a Stevie Wonder concert. There were people here fearing the PR nightmare that could have happened. You can bet that both schools will be sharing their experiences working with this promoter and if this game does become an annual event you can bet other schools will be warned to proceed with caution.
Now that the game is about a week away things do seem to be falling into place but IMHO the whole organization and logistical planning behind the scenes left a bad taste.
Thanks for reading, I know there were a lot of stressed out people on both sides of the ball here.

Very interesting and welcome to our humble board. We are very chill to visiting fans (particularly from our OOC opponents) so would welcome you or other Hawaii fans stopping by and sharing your thoughts on the game.
I had heard similar things from the Cal athletics side (without nearly this level of detail) about the tailgate debacle. There were numerous references to "problems with the promoter" but I had no idea things were this bad. Very interesting to get this behind the scenes view.
Curious as to how many fans Hawaii is bringing to this game. Do you have any insights? Honestly, since the tickets are all going through the promoter and the stadium, I'm not sure anyone has a great handle on this (Cal certainly doesn't) but I think we are all anticipating a pretty Aussie heavy "what are the rules and why do they stop playing ever 10 seconds?" type crowd. Still should be fun. Very much looking forward to it.

One ridiculous thing was that the promoter said both schools could not sell tailgate tickets at the venue because the ticket vendor and their IT team would need to be involved and that would be an additional cost. (on top of the $40 mcmuffin and fruit cup)
Hawaii sold approx 1200 tickets thru its athletic department I would estimate about 1000 flying down and the other 200 are from Hawaii fans living down under. (Just rough estimate).
Another thing is that there have been articles about 65K-70K tickets sold. There are some here that doubt that number. I hope Im wrong.
Going back to speaking tailgates, Hawaii takes much pride in its tailgates. Frankly our FB team really hasnt been that good lately so many (myself) look forward to drinking pre game and sobering up during the game. The past couple of years has been pretty dreadful so nothing like a good tailgate to vent, drink and complain more.

Any clearer idea on how much drinks are going to cost at the tailgate? It's just against my sensibilities to fork over 60 bucks for a buffet (how great could "local Australian delicacies" be??) and then have to pay for drinks on top of that. I'll probably end up going, but perhaps I'll bring my own 6-pack (or however many come in an Australian pack) of "Coors Lager." :p
