From the wife, who buttonholed a coordinator (i think it will be obvious which one) in the elevator.

Practices are at Sidney Univ. and started on grass, but now are on synthetic turf. Still a wet field practice, "which is not bothering the offense." Lot of focus on passing and defending passing, all in pads, and the wet conditions make it more demanding, and therefore in some ways better. That is it mates - wife gets better intelligence, so i am sending her in to the talk chalk with Sonny this afternoon to ask questions. To the extent I'm not giving any game plans away, will report back.

What is the weather forecast? From what I can tell, it is raining now but supposed to stop then rain friday, but clear up saturday (the day of the game). Someone stated that the stadium has a retractable roof but I don't think that is the case based on what I can find. It will be great if it doesn't rain. Watching the Rio closing ceremonies with all that rain was not optimal.

She is a spy for Bear Insider. Maybe have Moraga get her credentials?

Update: free time around Sydney literally just ended. Its now the schedule they have for an away game, including team meeting, team dinner, etc. They get to see parents/relatives/friends after game, and then fly back the next day. Continue to be impressed with the quality of the kids.

Today's team walk through at ANZ stadium was cancelled because the stadium crew was worried the field would be ripped up because it's so wet. They practiced instead at New South Wales. Very light sprinkles in the am in Sydney but has been bright and sunny all afternoon. Saturday still looks good. To answer the earlier question, ANZ does not currently have a retractable roof. They are going to add one as part of their upcoming renovations.

Heading over to Bondi Beach in a minute to see Beastmode unveil his clothing line. Should be great.

What is weird is that if you google ANZ roof you get:
THE ROOF

A key design feature of the Stadium is the translucent, saddle-shaped roof. The roof has been developed to suit Australian conditions by allowing maximum natural light during daytime events for player and spectator visibility.

The polycarbonate roof slopes down, thereby enhancing the atmosphere and optimising the venue's acoustics, while at the same time providing effective sun and rain protection for spectators. The roof also reduces glare and shadow on the field, ensuring ideal conditions for daytime TV broadcasts.

Suspended from a huge arch structure and measuring three hectares in area, the roof is made of giant 10 x 10 metre square polycarbonate 'tiles' separated by a series of stainless steel drainage gutters. The entire structure is contained in a framework made of materials flexible enough to cope with the changing shape of the roof plane and the expansion of the polycarbonate in hot sunlight.

ANZ Stadium is one of the few stadia in the world which effectively shades and protects most spectators without creating the claustrophobic feel of a fully enclosed dome. At the same time, the Stadium's unique design provides an environment for optimal turf growth.

So the roof doesn't allow water in and the turf is bad?

In any event, here is my Sydney wrap for today:

1) Aussies don't tip typically, and as a result, restaurant service and the like stinks. They usually respond by ripping the service to scare them into better service.

Most people have weird restaurant stories, and say the local wine is terrible. The Bay Area food industry is more impressive than people realize. Hawaii and Cal rebelled against the game operator to have a tailgate jointly without the game operator. Trust me, this is far better than what was planned by the operator. There was a big disconnect as to what is a tailgate party.

2) Per Sonny:

a) Downs really has come into his own
b) We now seem to have a pass rush, and DEs have improved dramatically
c) This is the fastest team he has been associated with
d) As discussed, oline and Webb are the strengths of the offense, and watch running backs and Robertson to make big plays.
e) Will see a lot more speed in the offense this year. Hawaii also will sue hurry-up, so look for tired defenses.
f) Kicker is elite
g) Kickoffs going into or out of end zones in practice. Some of this is the ball, some is PG is just bigger and stronger.
h) Initial practice field was 100 meters, not yards.
i) Sonny is expecting the birth of a son.

Mike P. said:

1) QBs will have a hard time initially adjusting to ANZ due to a lack of background (its an Australian rules football layout).
2) Hawaii will run up-tempo, but is weaker on defense this year, having lost most of their dline.

Weather seems to be improving.

Tipping in Australia is generally not done - might have something to do with their minimum wage..Try and find out what it is?! Have you learned to avoid words like "fanny, rooting," and names like "Randy" yet?

I have been to Sydney on two occasions recently. We went to several awesome restaurants. Never had a problem with the service. Wages are much higher in Australia so, employees do not depend on tips. You must not be going to the right areas if you think food in Australia is not good. We visited several districts in Sydney all with different types of food and many choices. I would say the food experience in Sydney to be very comparable to Seattle or San Francisco. Check out the Sydney Fish Market if you can. It is amazing.

I agree with this. I think Melbourne and Sydney are very comparable to Portland and San Francisco, respectively.

If you want authentic Thai food, my wife and I absolutely loved Boon Cafe when we were there a few months ago. We individually agreed that it was better than most Thai places in the bay area. Coffee is also generally better in Australia. I think service in restaurants are similar to the bay - generally good to very good.

Minimum wage in Melbourne is $18? I think it goes up with experience/ age to something like $25/hour? Maternity leave is one year versus our 12 weeks. Job protection is between usa and Europe (hard to fire sometime after probation).

Suggestions welcome with the proviso wife doesn't eat fish. We are going to Westin concierge recommended places, and we get stuff like this: the wait staff dean't speak English well, with other weirdness. When you go to a fancy Italian at the Rocks and: (1) they give you cold English rolls, (2) the staff doesn't know what Gelato is, (3) the Croation waitress goes around to each patron asking if the dish she is holding belongs to you, (4) the roof is leaking, (5) one party at your table gets their meal about an hour before the other party, (6) they throw down coffee with a eastern european smirk that its "American Coffee". will you get the picture. And its not just us. Its a running joke among the group,

I'd recommend you check out recommendations via zomato.com. That's their version of yelp and my wife and I found some great places to eat that way.

I also love the fast food sushi that's all around (a la carte sushi pieces for around $2/piece). But your wife doesn't eat fish.

Some other good food in Australia are their Indonesian and Malaysian food. We don't have much of those in the usa (including the bay), whereas you'll find plenty of good ones in Australia.

One thing to avoid: Mexican. They just don't do it right and/ or we're spoiled with really good Mexican in the bay.

Makes buying cigarettes in NYC seem inexpensive.

Perhaps much of the food service shortcomings are the result of the tight labor market? They've got a serious worker shortage down under, so this doesn't really come as a surprise. Would YOU work in food service when you can get a far larger paycheck somewhere else?
