They are in Bristol, Connecticut

http://awfulannouncing.com/2016/yes-the-announcers-of-the-cal-vs-hawaii-game-are-not-at-the-game.html

The Chron didn't send anybody from their staff.

Did the Oakland Tribune/Mercury News/CoCo Times?

I know Larry Bell from KGO is there.

It would've been cooler if they had an Aussie announcing staff.

They're not even announcing this game. They're talking about everything except the game they're supposedly watching. Horrible!

They just said let's "check downstairs" with the on-field reporter. Is he in Bristol, too? Did they use his hologram to interview Coach Dykes.

These announcers are not paying attention to the game. They are talking about all the other college football teams and the upcoming season about one half of the time.

Go Bears!

I have to disagree... they're talking about the other college football teams and the upcoming season about THREE QUARTERS of the time. It's like listening to a game in the late fourth quarter that's a blowout. So freakin' annoying!

ESPN is a zombie network. Great run. Fun times. Find the stake and cut off its head.

ESPN has been close to unwatchable since they sold their soul to the SEC.

If I was Cal's AD I would pressure Larry Scott or somebody to get on ESPN's case (not that we carry much clout, clearly). The announcing has been simply insulting.

I have to say though...it's quite flattering that 2016 is billed as the greatest opening weekend ever and we're the only game on the schedule.

A buddy listening to the radio broadcast mentioned that they said Hawaii.
Bellottii was not there.

Why not just stay in Bristol?

That was a fckin shameful attempt at announcing by those two guys. Bellotti and the NASCAR guy didn't even attempt to feign interest in the product on the field. Bellottii clearly had done little research on the team...

They were in Bristol, confirmed by many on Twitter, including Sports Illustrated media columnist Richard Deitsch.

Why would they fly all the way out to Hawaii to call this game when they could do it stateside?

That was easily the worst network TV production of a college football game that I have ever witnessed. The announcers were barely paying attention to the game, they offered little information about the two teams, and there were very few playbacks. ESPN should be embarrassed.

BearBones, very well said! If it weren't for the fact that un-synchronized video/audio drives me nuts, I would have shut off the sound and put on Starkey (which I used to do all the time). I actually was about to mute the sound anyway and just watch in silence. You are spot-on, ESPN should be embarrassed.

Too many commercials too.

I know they were using the Fox Australia feed for the game, but it would have been nice to see more of the Cal fans, cheerleaders there. Towards the end of the game they did show more but, in the meantime, we kept getting the Hawaii band and cheerleaders.

I mean, i understand the complaints about the announcing, but from espns point of view, what they did was completely logical.

Just from a financial standpoint, why wouldnt you spend the entire broadcast advertising your future games? The only people you are pissing off are the cal fans. The 99% of the people watching that game were probably more interested in hearing about the other games/teams than hearing the play by play for a perceived blow out.

You have to remember who the audience was last night. It was mostly college football junkies, probably a ton from the south, who dont give a rats ass about cal, but are just watching to get their football fix.

+1. Couldn't agree more. Shame on ESPN for that ridiculous display.

A lot of media skipped the game, apparently. Who was there?

San Francisco Chronicle: Sent a freelancer from the Bay Area (https://twitter.com/Emilnem) to cover the game, instead of Connor Letourneau.

Oakland Tribune/San Jose Mercury News/Contra Costa Times: Had Jon Wilner write the game story and an analysis story from the Bay Area. Who is replacing Faraudo?
http://www.eastbaytimes.com/sports/ci_30297355/cal-football-wins-opener-australia

Daily Cal: Didn't send anybody.

KGO: Sent Larry Beil: https://twitter.com/larrybeilabc7

Of course BI was there.

That kept making me think that they must have lost their video feed. I can't believe ESPN wouldn't have broadcasters AT the actual game!!

Were there any Cal cheerleaders there? I know we didn't have a band there. I'm wondering whose choice that was; did Hawaii just have more money to send their band to Sydney?

It would have been nice if the announcers would mentioned who made the tackle or caught the ball.

Plus 1000. The worst announcing job I've ever seen. I miss the old days when the announcers would tell you what happened in the game, instead of things that had nothing to do with the game
