Also found this on ESPN.com. It's a form you complete.

I just spoke to a contact on campus to see if the AD or conference has or was planning to complain to ESPN about the broadcast. He was not aware one way or the other of any discussions (not really his area), but he commented that if there are, they won't carry near the weight as do viewer complaints. So, everybody use that link and complain to ESPN. I made my feelings know, join me!

Ok so I tried to submit a complaint and got the response "You may not proceed. We suspect you to be a bot."

Well I guess that's one way to shut down complaints.

Seriously screw these people. Here's what I wrote - at least BI won't reject me on "bot" grounds.

Quote:

I don't typically write complaints (read: never) but having just watched the broadcast of the Cal/ Hawaii game from Sydney I simply must speak out. In a word: appalling. The announcers clearly had no interest in the game in front of them and instead decided to turn this into a three hour commercial for future ESPN programming. An example, with a tie score halfway through the first quarter the announcers ignored four consecutive plays on the field to talk about future SEC games. Four! This streak of ineptitude was ended with "and Hansen catches a pass for a first down... but back to the USC/ Alabama game..." It was almost comically bad. You even had other professional broadcasters tweeting and calling you out on it. I have never seen or heard such a shoddy, unprofessional and willfully ignorant broadcast on any sport from any network. Ever. Needless to say I will not be watching any future broadcasts from your network if I can possibly avoid it. You should be ashamed.

Its almost as if espn really did not want to broadcast the game.

With regard to the opressive graphics, they did seem to hit an all time high. At times covering 1/4 of the screen. Never understood why we can not get a clean screen. Why does the score need to be shown at all times? Once in a while would be fine.

Just adding my 2 cents.
Yes, the ESPN guys with the mic sucked.
Didn't need to read about it to know that. But interesting there's been so many that agree.

Sebastabear, I had to try it twice but was able to make my complaint on the second try so I suggest copying and sending your excellent comments again.

Here is what I told them:

ESPN and your broadcast crew did a horrific job "announcing" the Cal vs. Hawaii football game. To say that you announced the game gives ESPN more credit than warranted as your Broadcasters ignored the game and instead promoted other ESPN events ad nauseum.

It was clear that your announcing crew had done no homework, did not know the players involved in the game, added absolutely no insights and spent the vast majority of their time ignoring the action on the field and talking about other things.

What an embarrassment to your network. I learned after the game that you did not even send your announcers to view the game in person, unbelievable.

I will find it very difficult to watch other ESPN college football broadcasts in the future knowing how little respect you provided to the first College Football game of the year.

They didn't sent her to Australia. Nothing on her Twitter feed from the past 10 days is indicative of her being Down Under.

Also, there's this tweet during the game, which wouldn't make sense if she was in Australia.

Well at least ESPN is smarter with their money than with their choice of 'reporters.'

How many people do you think will complain? Wonder who gets the complaints, how many are needed to forward to someone who might actually consider a change.

Wonder if any Hawaii fans cared. If you go out if your way not to buy products advertised, that would be a way to convey a message

Yeah, the problem with the complaints is if you are disgusted with all the promotion but think that Oklahoma game sounds good and are definitely going to watch, they don't care about your complaint.

I think Hawaii fans were just happy the game was on ESPN and not pay per view as most of their games are.

I don't mind them showing the score. That's one of the good things that TV sports coverage has learned to do over the last couple decades, and that doesn't take up 1/4 of the screen. It's the other stuff that's to blame.

ESPN definitely gets away with this stuff because people are happy that their games are on national cable TV. I'll admit that 5 days ago, I was telling my friends it was awesome that ESPN was carrying our game. But after what went down on Friday night, I'm starting to realize ESPN coverage is barely better than no coverage at all.

If they wanted to hype their upcoming college football blockbuster games, they should buy commercial time.
Instead they blathered on over many Cal possessions. Players names were completely ignored (I'm sure their
families were annoyed), and graphics were displayed obscuring several plays at a time (Cal was playing quite fast).
At times, you could not tell a football game was going on.

I honestly could not get into the game at all with that coverage.

Also, ESPN might as well be the view+TMZ or something with all the babbling during their non-game programs. It is to sports what MTV is to Music.

ESPN is a dead channel walking. ESPN and ABC have basically killed my desire to watch any sports aside from Cal.

Any of you watch the North Dakota State game last night? The announcers on that game said over and over that it was the first real game of the college football season. It was odd - almost like the Cal - Hawaii game hadn't happened.

Then there was the glowing ESPN write up of the actual game that started like this -

"Thanks for hosting college football's season opener as California rolled to a 51-31 win over Hawaii. Good on ya, mate. However, there are a few things that we should probably clear up.

The point of college football these days is to get into the College Football Playoff. Neither team you saw on Friday is destined to get there this season. But Cal could make a bowl game, which will be kind of like its season-opening trip Down Under, but far less exciting. (Orlando in mid-December is nice, right?)"

I didn't know that if you are not a top ranked team to start the season, there is no point to your season. What an odd article.

There isnt when there is a playoff. This is why so many people were against that silly idea. Here you see that it was a legit concern.

With a playoff the regular season matters less, the individual games dont matter at all. The bowls dont matter. All that matters is the handful of teams that are in a position to get into the playoff.

Problem easily solved. 8 team play-off, win your conference, you're in. Then the regular season matters more. Win your division and you have a shot at the NC. Second to the last game of the season there would likely be 25 teams still having a shot.

Another huge improvement that comes with an eight-team playoff is that it reduces the effect of scheduling inequalities between conferences. For the conference champion slots, the conferences that play nine conference games are no longer at a disadvantage. For the purposes of the wildcard slots, conference losses should not be counted, since those are already accounted for in the conference championship standings. For the wildcard slots, the conference 2nd place teams should be compared only by the quality of their OOC schedule. If this led to teams scheduling two 'A' games instead of just one, that would be fantastic.

There are a lot of predictions that the Pac-12 will miss the playoff for the 2nd year in a row because there is not a super-dominant team expected to be undefeated or have a maximum of one loss. So the Pac-12 is going to be penalized for having a lot of good teams. Yeah that makes sense.

Never thought of that but that's a very spot-on analogy.

I tuned into MTV last night for the first time in probably 5 years......just to see what Kanye said on the VMAs. :p

Their program schedule appears to consist of just a few shows (there used to be several more) repeated over and over again, padded with movies and re-airings of the VMA. It's like a graveyard.

I would have everyone play mandatory games vs other conferences coupled with everyone playing the same 8 or 9 conference schedule.

Change playoff commitee as well as the preseason polls...

I like this idea because it makes the conference championship level the round of 16.

Then it kind of matters. Starting poll position is why the system is FUBAR
