Vanilla Scheme?

I noticed a DL stunt early in the game that was effective. Noticed a corner blitz too that they never saw coming.

After about the 4th series, our pass rush looked as vanilla as possible. Our offense also didn't run a lot of deep plays we've been doing in practice.

Saving it for later? I hope so.

Probably better to play vanilla, win by 20, keep the factor of surprise until later when we need to become aggressive.

Problem with the vanilla scheme explanation is it doesn't address poor pass rush, even in 3rd and long situations. Also, any run defense that gives up nearly 250 yards to a team with few P5-level talent was inadequate, vanilla or not. I'd like to remain positive about the D, so maybe it's just first game jitters.

I did notice their OL holding a LOT and they weren't getting called for it. We weren't really either. That said, Oregon has always been allowed to hold against us. We have to be able to get pressure through it.

Wish we had waffle as a dline coach. He knows how to make teams pay that hold you.

Our D just doesn't pass the eye test. There have been continual references to an increase in team speed, but I'm just not seeing it. I seriously couldn't tell the athletic difference between our first string Vanderbilt and third string walk-on Anderson. There were a bunch of close-ups on Devante Wilson and he looked really small, like 255 small... which is fine for a weakside rush end, but our other starting end is even smaller.
