Okay you football pros, please tell me why the NFL doesn't like Sonny's shotgun snap on every play. What advantage does a RB get taking the ball from a QB who just spun from under center. Is that it?

Nothing wrong with gun to me -- ran it exclusively all the time. When i wanted to get more of a downhill run game going we would throw in some pistol.

Simplifies running RPO, and allows QB to easily read the field.

The NFL doesn't necessarily get scheme right IMO -- much of the modern NFL pass game is built on the same principles that the Air Raid we run utilizes.

The exchange typically happens a yard or so closer to LOS, and the RB gets an extra step moving forward. In a game of inches it matters. That's why goal line stuff is run from under center. Being under center also helps with play action. When you hand the ball off under center, the QB's back is turned and he's able to hide the ball more effectively than in shotgun where the QB turns to his side.

That said, the way the game is being played now you're only going to see more and more shotgun as passing is increasingly emphasized.

A lot of NFL teams use the shotgun as much or more as "under center" for the QB. It will continue to grow every year...

It sure is tough to run a quarterback sneak from the gun.

No. The Air Raid is an incredibly simplistic offense, designed by Tony Franklin to sell to the maximum number of high schools. No way it works against even the more athletic college defenses, no less those of the NFL. Why, I read that right here, FROM MULTIPLE SOURCES, on Bear Insider!
