Fun story from ESPN. I got a clock made of these bleachers from the Wooden Duck, but I had no idea where it all had gone. Anyone else buy some of this? Sounds like the window has almost closed to do so.

Every time I now sit on the horrid new aluminum benches in Memorial I'm reminded how much more comfortable the old cedar benches were in comparison. I never did understand those who complained about splinters and how great it was going to be to get shiny new aluminum. There is no comparison. Full disclosure, I'm a furniture maker and love wood.

Very cool. I'm surprised this wasn't the plan all along as teams monetize this kind of stuff all the time. I have two old Dodger Stadium seats and a piece of Cameron Indoor Stadium floor in my home office and I probably could have figured out a good use for some Memorial bleacher wood too if I'd known about it.

You're surprised that the Cal admin just decided to throw away a million dollars (?) of good cedar? I'm not surprised.

I've got some! Used a bit, but still deciding what to do with the rest. Didn't the Wooden Duck's warehouse burn down a few years ago, taking some of this wood with it? Or was the wood in another location?

I hadn't heard that. It was neat hearing about the local restaurants and bars using it. I also enjoyed hearing about the whining of the Stanford fans who have to sit on it at Chambers Landing. Despite the complaining, I never heard of anyone actually getting a splinter from our benches but if there was ever a first time for it...

I went in to the wooden duck in the spring - there were quite a few small and medium table tops left, though not many with good paint or too many seat numbers. The stuff I saw generally was rough in that it had some significant gaps and was more rustic in appearance.

Interesting how so many complained about splinters and the old wood, now you're bitchin about aluminum. I guess a stadium cushion or chairbacks is out of the question.

I spent two different summers in Memorial painting those benches. It was a pain in the butt, but I need to get something as a reminder...

I have a number of 1 foot sections with the 3 different colors of paint and numbers on them - I've been planning to make a wall hanging memento with them, but haven't quite gotten around to it yet. Hopefully soon...

All the tables at Patxi's Pizza in Livermore are wooden bleacher seats from Memorial.

Chair backs don't work at memorial for anyone tall. My knees end up in the back of the person in front of me. Cushions help a bit but are not as nice as wood. Ideally Cal should have put in
seperate seats for everyone and raised the price a bit. Aluminum benches are the worst.

My wife got me a three-foot chunk (Gold Zone) the AD was selling as an Xmas gift back in 2011. It came mounted on steel beams and wooden base so it could still be used as a bench. It's in my back yard now next to other lawn furniture where we smoke stoagies. It's always a good conversation piece.

i feel like the aluminum benches are about 2 inches larger front to back than the old wooden benches which comes out of the space in between rows (since the rows have the same spacing). ugh, talk about an uncomfortable stadium. It's more so after the renovation for all but 9k seats.

I got a great bench with the number 9 (or 6 it's hard to tell) on it. I have it on my back porch and put my feet up on it when I relax with a glass of wine. Can't help but wonder if I ever saw a game while sitting on that same piece of wood.
I love it.

I never sat on the wooden benches since I have been parked in either the student section or the young alumni section since my tribulations started, but the wooden benches looked very uncomfortable from the warping that had occurred over the years. I am used to sitting on just aluminum but how were the wooden benches more comfortable, I find that bizarre.

Here's a shot of the clock they made me. Still smile every time I look at it.

Parklets on Shattuck Ave. using CMS wood.

The wood is cooler in hot weather and warmer in cold weather. I know that. It may be the spacing of the benches but I am far less comfortable in the new stadium than the old. Being 6'3" and 250 doesn't help either. I tend to notice every little lost inch of leg room or extra harsh feeling on my ass. That coupled with a lot of other little things finally made me give up my season tickets this year. I found myself whining at every game so I figured I'd keep to myself and watch the games at home. The bathrooms and the concourses are better in the new stadium though.
