Attendance part two

I don't have the numbers in front of me but I think last year went like this: the first game against Grambling had pretty decent attendance, 60,000 or so, helped by the Grambling band and some promotions. From there the attendance decreased for subsequent games, except for a spike for the USC game. I would not be surprised to see that happen this year too, barring some incredible play and victories by the Bears. This Saturday should be ideal, with a 3:00 start. Utah might show well, but nothing on the Texas level. I think it will be 40 to 45 thousand sold, but not everyone showing up. I want to see Cal do well, of course, and I want them to be able to recruit good players and keep the present players fired up. Does it bother them to look up at the stands and see so many empty seats? Do recruits come to the games and see the empty seats and wonder about the support? I don't know; it would probably make me wonder if I was in their shoes. It bothers me to see the stadium partially filled, although I must admit many times in the past sometimes I liked having room around me to stretch out and relax. Bug If people don't want to come you can't make them. Is that a Yogiism?

I've got a group of 20 going, but looking on calbears.com, there seems to be a lot of remaining seats.

I think it will be in the low 50's

50,000 attended the Texas game.

A large number of them were Longhorns fans.

Will the earlier start time mean more people than the Texas game?

Cheaper prices and 3 hour earlier start time. Plus a lot of the tickets sold to UT fans were Cal season tickets.

Not a reflection on anyone on the thread, but not one mention of Homecoming as a factor?

I think ticket sales this year will be up. Overall, we have a much better slate of home games. The opponents draw the fans. I do not think we will be suffering from lack of competitiveness in any game (hopefully). In fact, if we start to do well, we could see this being one of the biggest seasons in a while.

What will put a damper on all of this is the Thanksgiving weekend game against UCLA when we are going to have to play them the week later as well...

really hope it's 50,000 or higher. The 3 PM start time is fantastic, the temps will be about 70 and perfect, Utah vs. Cal is a great contrast of styles, the Utes likely have a decently sized alumni contingent here in the Bay Area, and Cal's been in every single game this year.

Also hoping the 3 PM start helps the student arrivals. Nothing I like seeing more than a full-ish (making up words again) student section before kickoff.

Attendance is going to depend on lot on start times and weather. I don't think anyone at this point thinks this team is better than 6-6 or 7-5, so you're primarily going for the experience. Saturday with a 3 p.m. start and good weather should be a good crowd. Oregon may be OK also, because it's an event. The last three games could be really low if they're all night games in November.

Hoping for a huge crowd. In my mind's eye, when I picture a Cal football home game, a day/game like this Saturday's appears. Warm, sunny, autumny, perfect time - 3pm kickoff, quality opponent. No place I'd rather be on the planet.

This is as close to noon and 1 o'clock games as we had when I was a student. I love the game time, given what the options are.

I think it will eventually be a sell out or close to it. It's likely the only game I'm going to this year, not just because I hate night games, but because no one I know wants to go them either. I'd imagine there are a lot of people in the same boat that would like to at least catch one game this year and this is looking like it be the only day game.

Agree. I mat start taping away night games and watching the next day. Instead of 4 hours,i would get about an hour and a half and no commercials.

Usc game is a good candidate for this

It's hard to imagine a decent turnout (> 50K) for this one. 2-2 record and Utah is not a name draw.

I think maybe the day game + the beautiful weather will help. Hoping Moraga's right - low 50s.

Looking back at 2014, we had 40k for CU (9/27, 1pm) and 45k for Washington (10/11, 3pm Homecoming).

In 2015, we had 42k for WSU (10/3, 1pm) for Homecoming.

I'd hope we get more for a ranked Utah, but I don't see us cracking 50k. Looks like more tickets for sale on calbears.com that for texas, as judged by a cursory look at the number of sections with high and medium availability.
