Anybody know about his prep career, why he wasn't noticed back then? Maybe he was still growing at age 18? Maybe he was in an offense where he couldn't dazzle with reception numbers?

One thing for sure, he is pretty fast and that is something that he must've had in high school, as well... and speed stands out, is measurable and hard to hide. Colleges are always looking for fast football players, aren't they? In any event, it worked out well for us!

He was a 6'3 in high school and if you watch the film he could obviously run then too. Only thing I can think of is lack of production and lack of exposure (i.e not attending camps).

Griffin Piatt is another guy that I can't believe wasn't recruited. His tape looks as good as most 3 star WR/S I've seen.

Chad Hansen's playing style reminds me of a combination of Jordy Nelson, Julian Edelman, Eric Decker, Wes Welker, Brian Hartline, Danny Amendola, Riley Cooper, Cole Beasley, Austin Colley, Joe Jurevicius, Jeff Janis and Kevin Walter.

Call me old school, but I think more a combo of Fred Biletnikoff, Dwight Clark, Chris Collinsworth and Ed McCaffrey.

This is a great story. There were whispers last year from the coaches that Hansen was the most talented WR on our roster even with Lawler, Treggs, etc here. Glad he's gotten the opportunity to showcase his talents.

because he didnt have the speed or quickness... nor the bulk of the big safeties

Did he not go to the camps? That's where the real recruiting and rankings come from. We're damned lucky our coaches and grad assistants were paying attention. It just comes down to chance and dumb luck sometimes in getting a guy

Speed? He apparently runs a legit 4.4. Can't imagine he was slow coming out of high school.

He had a good profile as a prep but I never heard of him. Probably didn't go to camps.

Moorpark HS (Class of 2013)
• A two-way prep player who was a first-team All-Marmonte League and All-Ventura County choice as well as team MVP and team captain as a 2012 senior when he recorded 49 catches for 882 yards receiving and 12 touchdowns, averaging 18.0 yards per reception for a team that finished 8-3 overall
• Registered a career-high three touchdown catches in a win over Royal during his senior campaign
• Played for a team that finished 7-5 overall during his 2011 junior season
• Also the MVP of the track and field team as a 2013 senior, winning the Marmonte League title in the 100 meters and also on two relay winners

I've seen plenty of tape. 2 and low 3 star guys don't look any faster or bigger than Piatt in HS.

Someone has to say it.......there are quite a few things wrong with Cal football, but Chad Hansen is not one of them (actually, in my opinion, none of our student-athletes are, but that's a rant for another thread).

We should all be proud of Chad and what he's doing.

Thanks for the post, good article. I think this says it all:

"He's a guy who's versatile enough to run past people, but also big enough to play physical, and smart enough to use his savvy to set people up," Dykes said. "At the end of the day, he's dependable."

He also works hard as hell on the game plan every week, as noted in the article.

In my opinion, I think the talent scouts/recruiters out there ought to shake themselves and alter their approach to "talent", because they obviously missed something re: Hansen. I played with a few guys like this in HS who never got a sniff of a college offer. There has to be a way to spot guys like this so they get a fair shot.

maybe that was his problem, he didn't put his highlights online with Hudl and likely didn't attend the rivals/scout/etc camps. Surprised a school like Davis didn't offer him.

White DBs get disrespected by the recruiting services anyway.

Piatt put up crazy good numbers in high school on both sides of the ball and was team MVP in hoops, too, but he didn't go to combines and had no HUD1 highlights. Was really hoping he'd walk on at Cal after getting in as a student and tons of people said I was being a homer when I said he could really add something to the team, with the undercurrent that white suburban db's don't usually make it. Of course, that's often true but they don't usually have size and athletic ability of a guy like Piatt, either.

Campolindo HS (Class of 2012)
• A first-team MaxPreps All-American, All-East Bay, All-Metro and All-Diablo Foothill Athletic League selection as a defensive back during his 2011 senior season when he broke the school record and tied for the team lead with 12 interceptions from his safety position
• Also had 50 receptions for 1,030 yards receiving and 15 TD catches as a senior, including a long reception of 91 yards, to add second-team ESPN High School California All-State, and first-team All-East Bay and All-DFAL honors as a receiver to the defensive back honors
• Added a pair of touchdown passes for 76 yards throwing the ball as a senior
• Senior squad advanced to the Division II state championship game after winning North Coast Section and DFAL titles, before losing to Washington Union to finish with a 14-1 overall record and a 6-0 league mark
• Made 26 tackles and had one pass defended while playing in only three games due to injury as a 2010 junior
• Also a standout basketball player who was named the DFAL MVP as a 2011-12 senior for a team that won the league title and was the Division III North Coast Section runner-up

Incidentally, the guy he tied with for team INT's at 12 plays rugby at Cal and his dad swam at Cal, too, Karl Thornton.

Well, I may coming at this from the wrong end of the stick, but my first reaction to this story was... too bad for poor Idaho State. Here's a team who takes a chance on a guy, and as soon as they do, someone else snaps him up. The old story, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, and Idaho State loses a chance to improve.
MoragaBear

That may happen at Cal, too. As soon as he blossoms, he might well be off to the NFL just as fast next season.
