I don't know how old or accurate this list is: (article is dated from March 2016)
But,
Not that anyone who gets the constant solicitations doesn't know this already:
This list has Cal at 15 with 1.67 Billion, just ahead of UCLA.
But, compare Michigan at 9.6 Billion - heck, Minnesota is at 2.99 Billion. (So, why is my daughter's out of state tuition at Michigan so *&*@# high)

We do donate to various Cal funds (CAA, L&S, History, Haas, College of Chemistry, Womens Basketball) - but those presumably don't go towards the base endowment, and it's not like we have hundreds of thousands to give.

Your OOS tuition is likely a reason why Michigan has such a large endowment. Along with lots of donations from the auto industry executives. But Michigan has enough OOS students they can basically tell the Michigan legislature to butt out.

The California State legislature is all over the UC to the point where one could say what's the point of donating (if not completely restricted towards a goal)... you give a dollar to the school unrestricted or to cover tuition or similar, the state will just pull one dollar back from funding. Plus, a school doesn't just get a endowment by soliciting random donations, and giving random donations doesn't help build an endowment.

Also, from talking to a Michigan prof, they just do not fail kids out, they take the money like a private school and smile. So much so that people can get deep in to a science or math sequence and be worthless because the previous instructor gave some one a pass when they were not near competent.

The list is not accurate. I'm not sure where they get their numbers but it's way off. My hunch is that the number they quote for Cal only accounts for the endowment that the university directly manages. There is a larger chunk of money that belongs to Cal that is actually managed by the UC Regents.

I think you're right. If you include Berkeley's portion of the endowment managed by the UC Regents, the total is closer to double the $1.67 billion.

For sure the A&M total is the system-wide endowment total, split amongst 11 campuses (not just College-Station). Cal's total is split between the school-specific foundation total (the amount listed) + the total managed by UC Regents, valued between $11-13 billion, depending on your source.

I wouldn't get too worked up about this.

My sources tell me the total UC Regents endowment for 2015 is closer to $8 billion.

Everyone's numbers are counted differently. For example, UW's endowment covers 3 campuses.

That said, we need more money regardless.

Not financially at least.

Michigan, Texas, and TAMU all use their athletic programs to maintain alumni interest generate funding. Cal hasn't figured that out.

What is measured in the funds controlled by the Cal Board of Trustees. For those into fund accounting, there are funds held by UC which are dedicated to Cal related items, but they are not Cal funds. For example, these are UC funds which are pledged to pay down debt for Cal capital projects, etc. The last time I tried to describe the accounting, everyone on the board fell asleep, including me while I was typing. So no details, but the Federal government does not consider this part of Cal's endowment, and there are legitimate reasons that is the case.

It is also true that Michigan, UMinn, UT, etc. all have medical schools, which we do not. As for the OOS tuition at Michigan--tuition generally goes to operating expenses, not endowment, although it reduces the amount of endowment income needed for the operating budget. WIAF is correct about the Foundation controlled money v. that controlled by the Regents. For one thing, the campus is owned by the Regents. If you donate $50 million to build a gold-plated locker room, that money is technically the Regents' not the campus's. That said, I think the numbers are still off.
