If you missed it, you still have a chance. Today's WSJ, in an article by Jason Gay, memorializes the hatred that the Badgers have for Coach Khakipants and his troops. It's a real funny piece. For instance, here's a small slice:

"But you want to know the thing that really makes me nuts? Here's what Michigan people think about Wisconsin: They don't think about us at all......Even if the Badgers have caught up in recent decades, Wisconsin people still look at Michgan as a Death Star. But Michigan people look at us like we're someone they met in the grocery store once 10 years ago. Oh, you. Hi.

The thing Gay wants more than anything is to "ruin a Wolverine dream season." Gosh, wouldn't we like to ruin a dream Furd season? :p

I think Wisconsin will be high as a kite at the kickoff. I don't know they can sustain it.

The Big Ten is a bit unique in terms of the multipolar nature of its rivalries, most teams will play for several rivalry trophies every season.

What's really odd, though, is that it's been 6 years since Michigan and Wisconsin played.

The last time they played, Cal had the axe!

Since they last played, Cal and Texas have faced off 3 times.

That's the major downside in moving to 14 teams, old rivalries are collateral damage.

Very nice column. The way Wisconsin and Michigan think about each other is similar to...
NorCal and SoCal
and
Canada and the U.S.

That's true, but a lot of those rivalries are either really goofy or meaningless (Iowa and Minnesota have a "rivalry" for a trophy called Floyd of Rosedale, which is a brass pig), Michigan-Ohio State dwarfs all other matchups since those 2 programs have dominated the Big Ten for the last 50-60 years, only Wisconsin and Michigan State have made some noise as of late, and Penn State only joined the Big Ten in 1995. At least in the SEC where every school has like 4-5 rivalries, they are all usually pretty interesting (Tennessee has Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Vanderbilt, Florida has Georgia, Tennessee, plus Florida State then Miami on occasion, Alabama has Tennessee and the always epic Iron Bowl with Auburn, plus the recent run of games with LSU, etc.).

So according to WSJ, University of Michigan is the No. 1 public university. Hmmmm....

Since we're no longer #1 let's start 'taking some chances' with the football program

Those rivalries aren't meaningless to their fan base, most of them were started over a century ago, with special trophies set up in the 19th or early 20th century. SEC rivalries like Tennessee-Florida don't compare, the states don't even share a border, and there is no trophy, they're only more relevant at the national level becasue of the greater coverage the SEC has been receiving.

Tennessee/Florida was a big deal in the 90s and early 2000s because it usually had a major impact on the SEC East race, and since the SEC was the first conference to create divisions, that matchup became huge.

I've often wondered, what is Michigan famous for? Do they have 29 Nobel Prize Winners who either matriculated at Cal or have been associated by teaching and research on campus? Do they have the Lawrence Rad Lab? Are they number one in chemistry and physics according to all the esteemed ranking groups? Ever had a Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court graduate from U of M? Do they have a jaw dropping vista from their campus of the Golden Gate Bridge and the world beyond? To cut through the mustard, what is the undisputed world's greatest public institution of higher learning - UC Berkeley!!!!!

What does Michigan have? The ability to stick 115,000 people into a stadium where they sit on top of one another in freezing weather and watch an arrogant bunch of athletes parade around on the gridiron. Uh, also, a coach they will soon tire of as he has offended or annoyed every other institution and company he's been affiliated with.

Michigan is Harvard compared to Ohio State, which is closer to what you're describing (except the part about Harbaugh).

tOSU is to the BIG as ASU is to the Pac12. That doesn't mean Michigan is the equal of Cal, more likely to Washington.
