Worst thing about any Cal player, is not playing Smart.......Forgiven Saffle, for we have won, but not very smart.....

What did he do?

My wife and I argued at length as to how far you go with Saffle's punishment. From banishment from the next game, to a mild slap on the wrist. What he did was inexcusable, and almost cost the game with his total dumb a** penalty. But he is young, he is good, so how far do you go with the whipping behind the shed. I can forgive Saffle for his momentary glitch, but I abhor how he almost made Cal play "dumb"---that is the worst.....We may not be the strongest, or the fastest, or with the most stars, but for God's sakes we should be close to the smartest.....Saffle's play on fourth down was plain dumb.

While saffles penalty was dumb it wasnt a throat slash like knife across the neck it was more throat chop saying no like if you're too drunk and somebody asks you to take another shot. Bonehead play a lot like Enweres ball drop. Im sure it wont happen again.

Saffle was trying to out dumb Vic Enwere at the end of the game.

I still have not seen what it could have been nor heard an explanation. The fact that the officials reversed the penalty against Utah on the punt was a joke, though.

I was for a throat slash gesture.

The one clip they had on TV and the comments by the announcers indicated it was Saffle getting in the face of the Utah QB after the play was over and taunting. In other words we had stopped them on fourth down and they were given a penalty and an extra set of downs. Not good, but I sure a strong learning experience. Very good, young player with a bright future.

I'm not referring to the fourth down stop in the first half. I'm talking about the punt toward the end of the game. TheSouseFamily, are you saying a second Cal player also made a throat slash gesture, in spite of the lesson that Saffle's should have taught?

Sorry, chazzed, I may have misunderstood. I was referring to the 2Q stop (which I think was. 3rd down), not the punt. That was definitely on Saffle and according to the announcers definitely a throat slash gesture.

The personal foul on the punt was on Worstell for unsportsmanlike conduct after the play but on TV it was never shown why. I' watched it several times and still don't see what Worstell did.

Okay and no problem. I also tried to figure out what he did, without success. The Pac 12 Networks game coverage simply didn't catch it, I'm hoping.

I'm going to say I read the OP like four times last night trying to figure out the math and just getting more and more confused. I was afraid I was having some sort of brain aneurysm or had miscounted exactly how many cocktails I'd had at the game. Relieved to find out the culprit was someone else's drinking instead of mine.
