I thought Ted did an EXCELLENT job calling the game at the end!
He set it up wonderfully with the piece after the D's earlier stop: "The D gathered and said 'we're gonna have to do that again'"
Then he brought that back up as they truly needed to do that again.
But the best part of his calling it, was as the clocked ticked down inside of one minute, with neither coach calling timeout, Robinson immediately pointed this out - "both coaches are out on the field, looking at each other in a game of chicken - who's going to call the timeout? Neither is, the game is going to be decided right here, right now!" (something like that, I'm paraphrasing.)
There's another thread out there called, "Call the Focking Time Out!"
But you know what? Dykes won the face off! Had Sonny called the timeout, Utah would likely have had another play form the 1 to get the ball in the end zone. The game ended on 3rd down, not 4th, due to the clock expiring.
So, while it was a risk that Sonny not be able to get his Offense back on the field after a Utah TD, he also allowed his D's backs to be put against the wall and allowed them to come thru for the W. That is great Focking BALLS, to me. I mean, that has got to be a great developmental step, psychologically, for the D! One has to think that it will only inspire them perform stronger as a unit in the future. Congrats to Sonny. Did you see him going Focking Crazy running around the field after that last game winning stop? Awesome celebration by any coach!!!
And THANK YOU to Ted Robinson for setting it up so well.
Had Bill Walton been calling the game down the final stretch, it wouldn't have compared 10%. He'd have been talking about the great Berkeley weather at that moment.
Ted gets some grumbles from folks on this site from time to time. I think it's totally unfounded. He's one of my favorites, easily, and yesterday proved why!
