I'm not a lip reader, but if I had to guess, I would say that Whittingham was yelling something along the lines of "that's on you! That's on you! That's on you!" But don't take my word for it.

I think he was yelling at the refs, most likely for calling that timeout before the 1st down play after the PI. It appears that Whittingham didn't want the TO then, he wanted it after the play, but in the confusion/crowd noise something was lost in translation and the ref called the TO.

Thats it. Just watched his press conference. crucial error by officials.

I initially thought it was directed toward the refs, but watching the replay it seems like he was yelling at his players.

The entire last series was a disaster from an officiating stand point. Complete disaster.

I don't really understand this. I was at the game, happened to be watching the sideline, and immediately when the whistle was blown on the play, there was a Utah coach (I believe in a white jacket) streaking down the sideline to call the timeout, after which they signaled the official timeout for the injury.

I'm a decent lip reader. Pretty sure he was saying "you guys said all the calls would favor us! That's not favoring us!"

Was the second/third TO? The other one was the first TO, I think.

the sideline reporter said it was so loud that there was a communication error b/w coach and the refs when the TO was called after the PI call

props to the crowd for bringing the noise (especially on the alumni/utah side) to help cause that error

I saw the same thing. I sit in C and that coach was all the way down on the 5 or 10 calling a TO well before the injury was noticed.

Regardless of the timeout.
Put the F-ing ball in the endzone, you azzholes!
That's what I'm left thinking about if I'm a Utah fan.
Utah blew it, plain and simple.

Yeah cause Utah definitely was screwed by the officiating in this game. Child please. The zebras couldn't have done more for Utah if they picked up their players and carried them into the end zone. Utah saying they didn't get a fair shake from the refs is like Alabama complaining they don't get enough love from ESPN.

In general, yes, Utah got far more calls go their way. I would say that charged timeout they didn't actually call was bad. Also, after the incomplete pass on the one, you can see two refs chatting with the Utah coach and then turn and run because apparently they, like Utah, weren't paying attention to the play clock.
MilleniaBear

Thats probably the issue. He was about to receive a freebie TO courtesy of the Cal injury but the refs took his TO too. I was concerned that we would be charged a TO or worse because our injury stalled their momentum.

Nobody has said anything about their 4 second pass play that seemed to take a lot more than 4 secs. Wasn't long enough to end the game but still it was more ref luv for Utah.
Sebastabear

Well Utah may have had some miscommunication on that TO with the refs, but they were only in the game at all because of that idiot unsportsmanlike call and that bad PI call on two separate drives - the later of which would have definitely sealed the win for Cal. And don't get me started on that "non" block in the back. I mean just give me a break. On balance Utah got way, way more love from the refs and second chances than any team deserves. Whittingham bitching about his TO is just comical. Here's an idea - how about when you are gifted first and goal from the one yard line by the refs you punch it in? Seems like that might have worked out for him too.

Agree 1000%, wth happened on that non-block in the back call? On tv, they never showed the so-called unsportsmanlike call on us. That whole thing started a chain of bad officiating that really marred the final series. And in the team states, yes -- Utah had way fewer penalties and yds assessed than we did.

The guy had seven chances inside the 9. The refs gave him 4 extra and took away one, for a net 3 extra. He shouldn't be blaming the refs- his guys couldn't get it done. And whether or not you agree with Sonny's TO strategy, he definitely mind f**ked Utah. Cal D STRONG Wittingham excuses WEAK.

The block in the back was clearly shown on TV and I'd really like to know why the official seemed to "wave" it off.... because he actually mentioned it on the microphone.

The unsportsmanlike call was not shown on TV, but the commentators said that the Cal player had done the "knife-slash" across the throat at the Utah QB. I think it was Saffle, and it gave Utah the ball at the Cal 5 with a 1st down. The ball had been at the Cal 11.

Utah called TO's with 20 seconds left, 14 seconds left, and 7 seconds left.

I believe that Whittingham was pissed off when it was 2nd and Goal for the Utes. He wanted the Refs to check the clock. And instead, they thought he was requesting a time out. That was HUGE.... because Utah had no time outs left and were forced to PASS.

Utah didn't get called for holding once, even though their o-line tackled our d-lineman and linebackers on several occasions. I'm not talking chop blocks or pancakes, there were several times where a Utah lineman wrapped up our player and threw them to the ground near the point of attack.

The refs tried to take over the game and hand it to Utah, particularly at the end. It went beyond incompetence into highly suspicious.

The hold called on Hudson never happened.

The block in the back on the punt was obvious and waving it off was egregious.

The unsportsmanlike conduct on that punt was nowhere to be seen.

The PI on 4th and Goal was borderline at best. For a game deciding situation making that call was horrendous. Remember how we lost at Utah last year? Incomplete on 4th down with the Utah defender grabbing and yanking the collar of our receiver. No call. But we maybe arm bar a guy and the flag comes right out.

It's disconcerting because it smacks of bias.

I thought he was yelling at his offensive lineman. 4th and 1 and one play left and they did not punch it in. Looney had penetration and another Cal player was also in the backfield. "It's on you! It's on you!" he was yelling.

No doubt, but it seems to be the m.o. of Pac refs these days to protect the big-winning programs (see Oregon and Stanford).
