Why are the games 4 hours long?

These games are really long even without overtime and I feel bad for those who used public transportation.

Is it really the play calling? Or is it the Pac-12 refs. To me it seems like the refs who must be from the SEC with an active plan to make Pac-12 football unwatchable. I am sorry but 28 penalties is ridiculous. The commissioner needs to get this fixed.

Agreed!! If they can't keep the (regulation) games under 4 hours consistently, they are really crazy to schedule so many games for 7:30 or even 8pm.

Here's my laundry list of main reasons: Clock stoppages after first downs; incomplete passes; replays; penalties. Penalties dive me nuts, especially the block in the back and holding both of which, IMO, could be called on almost every play if the officials really wanted to be picky. I really feel for folks, especially those of my age group, who shell out for tickets and then get a majority of late start games that regularly run to midnight that effectively preclude or degrade the live attendance experience.

The length of our games has virtually eliminated the post game shows on KGO radio 810

4 hours would be normal. this game was nearly 4-1/2 hours. Judging from the tweets below, the game ended at 11:55 pm. I assume it started at 7:30 pm.

(Confession: I fell asleep toward the ending, since I had been up since earl in the morning.)

I left the stadium at the end of the third quarter. Just too tired to sit there and get in the traffic mess. I wasnt the only one traffic was bad until i got to Ashby. Am in Stadium lot.

So tell me what you did if you took Bart? My sonnended up taking Uber back to SF. Not sure what he paid but it wasnt cheap.

The final BART train of the night from Berkeley to SF leaves at 12:30 am...yup, it would be really hard to make that train if the game ends at 11:55 pm.

Why don't they start the games at 7 pm? 30 minutes earlier would make a huge difference.

At 7pm even fewer people would get there because of the rush hour traffic. The full crowd did not arrive last night until well past 8pm. The 6pm Friday night game 4 years ago was a complete mess and it was empty at kickoff.

From the ESPN write up :
"The teams combined for over 1,000 yards and 100 points on the night. They tied the FBS record by running 203 combined plays. They also joined forces for a staggering total of 28 penalties for 285 yards."

I don't know how long the average penalty takes, but assuming 60-90 seconds, including the play that was negated, that's an additional 30-45 minutes of game time.

I took one back after the Texas game after we missed the last BART out back to SF. It was about $45 (including bridge fare). Thankfully not that bad split with 2 buddies, but if I'd had to cover that myself I'd have been none too happy.

For those who don't want to spend a lot of money, there's always AC Transit.

I posted an ESPN article a while back explaining why games are longer for some teams
It said, among other factors that fast temple teams have longer games and especially if they score a lot

Basically TDs with extra points and kickoffs take a long time

I was surprised and amused that they ran the video board ad about how easy it is to take Amtrak/Capitol Corridor to the games last night sometime in the 2nd half, when I think it stops running by around 10pm.

And passing the ball with lots of first downs stops the clock more often.

Left work in San Jose about 5 pm and was tempted at one point while on 880 to cut over and take BART. Glad I didn't since I would have missed the OTs. Took me about 2 hours and 35 minutes to get to the stadium. Would've taken even longer if I had not used Waze.

2.5 hours? Did this include the walk up to the stadium or just the drive through traffic?

Colorado didn't need 4 hours to win their slop fest at Furd, was prob less than 3.

Driving time to my parking lot (at Genetics) took about 2 hours and 15 or 20 minutes. I had a similar experience 3 years ago when I went to see Sonny introduced at a function at the stadium. In that case though I found a spot about a block from the stadium. That was a Monday if I recall correctly.

We also spent about 2.5 hours on the road. Left San Jose about 3:15 and parked in stadium lot a bit after 6. Drive interrupted for maybe 15-20 minutes to get food to go at In-n-Out in Union City. Basically, traffic was stop-and-go all the way on 880 from Milpitas to just north of the Coliseum. Barring Rose Bowl implications, that might have been my last Friday night game. 2.5 hours to get there, plus a four hour game, plus the drive back. Finally got to bed around 2 a.m.
