Question about onside kick and fair catch.

As the receiving team, if an onside kick is coming your way can you call a fair catch off the bounce? I've seen players do this, but once the ball hits the ground(which for an onside kick is instantly), I thought anyone can get hit cause the ball is live.

Once the ball hits the ground its live. I think it may be a penalty to call a fair catch on an onside kick (assuming the ball hits the ground).
