It was supposedly a done deal with Tom Herman but a " red flag" popped up in the vetting. Have no idea what that means specifically or if there is any basis to it. What I do know he has enough talent to beat OU and Louisville yet lost to Navy and SMU ( in a blow out) who each were vastly outmanned. Plus he should have lost to Tulsa.

Navy is a pretty good team this year, and Houston kind of went in the tank after that loss, but showed life after bouncing Louisville. Herman obviously can coach up for big games, Texas has not beaten a single decent team in the last half-decade other than Oklahoma in 2014.

Since we can't out Bear Raid anyone, and likely it will be hard to be a pure defensive team in the Pac-12 without the players, why don't we go completely off the rails, outside of the box, and go after the Navy coach (Ken Niumatalolo)? Dude is working miracles over there. They've beaten Notre Dame and Houston. Sure they lost to Air Force, but they're still 8-2 with this system using non-athletic scholarship players (correct?). Paul Johnson his mentor has also been good for Georgia Tech over the years, always competing for their conference championship (so it's been done in a power conference as well).
Sure we won't be the NFL talent factory so we'll have to give up seeing Cal names on Sunday Night Football, but perhaps we may be way more competitive. We're all about Saturdays, right?

They did beat OU twice in that span and they cost Baylor a Sugar Bowl appearance with an upset last year - granted Baylor finished game with 4th string qb and Texas with 8 freshmen on defense. But to your point, the performance of Texas has been completely unacceptable since 2009.
As to Herman ( and I like Navy - going to go see them play in Dallas this weekend ) UH was just clueless against that option. Has anyone on this board ever seen a 7-1-3 defense because I saw one in that game. I bet you 50% of the guys on this board can immediately tell you what the problems are with trying to defend the option with that alignment. It was just shockingly bad coaching. And I could give similar examples in the SMU and Tulsa games. Plus I think at least 40% of his signees at UH would not academically qualify at Texas. Strykur - the vast majority of my Texas buddies agree with you and think I am unduly harsh. I am just not sold on the guy. The fun thing is I think they will get past whatever this red flag stuff is and we will get to see who is right about him.

Didn't Clancy say Cal players weren't smart enough to run his defense ?

Don't know if I've seen a 7-1 defense but I saw Cal tackle UNR's dive back with about 3 guys each play while letting Colin Kap run around the end with the ball over and over and over and over. Maybe that's a game Sonny saw and was the reason he didn't sign Clancy

82 if I remember correctly I had lurked until that game. Believe some of my first posts were about how crazy the Cal defense was that night in Reno.

I wonder what happens to Dave Aranda...assuming Herman brings Todd Orlando with him.

If Herman brings Orlando and Charlie stays on in Texas I think Aranda goes to Texas unless he picks up a HC job somewhere.

A&M boards not happy. LSU crushed them. Sumlin had Johnny Football. What has he done since he beat Bama? Well he beat the 15th ranked team this year. That team the Bears play Saturday Sumlin is not special.
