The Jeff Tedford Coaching Tree?

I tried to look it up on line, but couldn't find anything. Does anyone have a list they could share, in addition to Wilcox. My understanding is that the "tree" would be defined as coaches who coached under Tedford, and players who played for Tedford and are now coaching. That would be in addition to Wilcox, of whom we're all aware.

I'm asking because the more I think about it, the more convinced I am that the next coach should be one of JT's branches. That's where we have a history of success, and that's where we're likely to find candidates who understand the pitfalls of coaching at Cal, and will be able/willing to deal with them.

He's put together an interesting staff at Fresno St. The DC is a very unique hire.

Doesn't count! JT worked for CP, not the other way around.

But Petersen is a member of the illustrious Jim Sochor coaching tree, which also includes Gary Patterson, Dan Hawkins, Mike Bellotti, Bob Biggs, maybe a few others. UC Davis was a Div. II powerhouse back in the day.

Yes, the other way around ... unless the WR coach doesn't work under the offensive coordinator?

that was belotti's staff, so it's his tree.

Are you talking for head coach or for assistants?

We don't need coaches from Tedford's tree anymore than when we needed coaches from Snyder's tree when we hired Tedford. Tedford didn't come from a history of success at Cal or understand the pitfalls. (and by the way, every school has its own pitfalls.) If anything, maybe not having a preconception of Cal's limitations can be a good thing.

In my opinion Lake would be a very Tedfordesque hire from the Petersen tree. Wilcox had experience at Cal but lots of other places too. I think he is the only one remotely ready to be a head coach who is from Tedford's tree. Also, there is a huge gap between dealing with the pitfalls of Cal as a head coach vs. an assistant coach and an even bigger gap as a player.

A lot of good assistant possibilities there if the head coach is interested, but I don't think many that look like head coach candidates.

Too-shay! Even if it is a questionable tree relation, I did not know they were on the same staff at Oregon. I thought you were referring to the consulting work JT did for CP.

I don't think many of the branches of the Tedford tree are very robust. Some coaches are good at coaching and mentoring their assistants (eg. Bill Walsh) while others are just good at coaching (eg. Vince Lombardi). I'd put Tedford in the less successful Lombardi category

Still OL coach 15 years after starting with Tedford. Very few of Tedford's assistants have successfully moved up the coaching ladder. Wilcox, Tosh, who am I missing. Plus, these are both defensive coaches who wouldn't have worked closely with Tedford

I think lots of younger coaches from Tedford as a player will be coaches. Toler, Tosh, etc. I think there are a number of them out there just starting out. We will see. Tedford also has a few more years left.

Gould was HC, but I believe he's the only former Tedford assistant to become HC.

Are you suggesting that Lombardi (and coaches like him) are less successful than coaches like Walsh or that Tedford was less successful than other coaches within the Lombardi category?

According to his players, Lombardi was a great mentor to. His players. Most became successful in other endeavors after football. We don't hear about him mentoring his assistants, but football was not as assistant driven back then. There were only an handful of assistants and head coaches were much more hands on than today.

Yes, and it seems Gould was not ready for that jump never having been a coordinator.

Then that means Lane Kiffin doesn't come from the Tedford tree, since it was Pat Hill's staff.

And yet, Tedford is the reason Kiffin is a coach today.

I'm sure Petersen benefitted, too, from working for 3 years under Tedford's offense.
