Right down the road, has a great defense, ten years of experience, attracts top student athletes, from a locally connected program that has been kicking butt with authority. Would he be worth a look? I'm down to pillage the farm and it might weaken them a bit too.

He's not a DC, he's a Director of Defense. Same way David Shaw is Director of Football.

Seriously, how pretentious can Furd get?

Serious enough to get Willie Shaw and his son, to fork over money to fund an endowment for his salary. You may think its pretentious, but its a model that it is working, unlike the Cal sports model.

another good thing about him: he could sweep all the pig look-alike contests for us

I don't object to selling the name. I object to "Director of."

Call him the Willie Shaw Defensive Coordinator.

If you look at other schools, they basically do it this way.

Who gives a rip about his appearance if he can coach...

The fact that his name never really shows up in the HC derbies tells me he makes a lot of money at furd, is happy there, and that he may be willing to wait to become the furd HC. I think he'd be a really good HC candidate.

Personally, I prefer HMFIC as the title (Head Motherf...er in Charge).

i get the impression it's either what you are saying or that he's one of those DC lifer types (see Petey K at UW too)

x2M! This is exactly what our future should look like in all sports, or the entire structure will implode.

NO, he may be next Brad Freeman Director of Football if Shaw jumps to the NFL. BTW, he also was the recruiting coordinator, something rather important to college football these days.

I've mentioned his name as well as UW's Kwiatkowski as coaches I'd like to go after. I was impressed with Anderson last year at a coach's clinic I attended (Glazier). I think he would be good.

Right up until it looks like a guy is a serious candidate to come to Cal, I will always take cheap shots at Furds, just for the sport of it and for the sake of the rivalry. The guy looks like porky pig.

As well you should. He is ... porcine in appearance and ... metabolically challenged.

All this "Lance Armstrong as Stanford HC" talk is crazy. David Shaw seems like the least likely P5 coach to leave for the NFL. I wonder if everyone who thinks "NFL teams can buy any college coach they want" are the same people who've been saying "furd will drop off after harbaugh" since 2011.

Harbaugh's departure doesn't change the fact that the furd jobs (yes, including the coordinators) are quite cushy in multiple ways we at Cal can't even imagine.

I heard that when Lance Armstrong first heard about "The Glove" (Stanfurd's answer to those who questioned how their football players had suddenly become so strong, so fast), he said "Fock! Why didn't I think of 'The Bicycle Glove'?!? I tried just about every other excuse/smoke screen/obfuscation strategy that ever existed... "

(realizes mistake). Oh my. I'll just show myself out now.....

Well, I stand behind my statement/Freudian slip. Lance Armstrong will not be Stanford's next HC.

The last Stanford assistant coach we hired as a Head Coach was Mike White. For those of us who were around then, you probably recall that the guy put some electricity into the program. Of course, he was a Cal grad, as well. But it was a pretty bleak time: probation, student apathy, etc. And he did turn it around. The 1975 Cal-USC game is on YouTube, if you need a reminder.

Mike White was a good football guy but he recruited players who had no business being at Cal. I know this firsthand as one of these recruits was a friend of mine.

Yeah, there was that issue. But for those of us who grew up watching Levy and Willsey's teams (great guys, but the teams were seldom riveting), it was sure a fun few years! I guess the real parallel is that White and now Lance Anderson came from Stanford programs which, at the time, were strong. So they hopefully knew/know how to build and maintain such a program. I know nothing about Lance Anderson, but I assume he is comfortable going into a recruit's livingroom and selling the advantages of going to a strong academic university and that's a (but not the only) key attribute that Cal's head coach needs to have.
