Of course he can, but he needs to sign off. I suppose they can have an agreement in principle and an official hiring later...

Ursa, no offense, but almost no business is done in the same room these days. I expect he has a phone. If he is going to the wilds of Alaska where he can't be reached, I would expect he would delegate final decision to somebody with parameters set for making the decision. Can't see why he'd care to have a heavy hand in this decision anyway. Ain't going to be his problem.

Even if a decision is made today, we might not hear about it for several days. I don't see us hearing today and I don't see this waiting 2 weeks.

Further, I'm pretty sure none of our coaches in the last 20 years have had an actual, officially signed contract when the press conference was held because forget about actual signature, the documents had to go through UC's contract process for months before they were actually approved to be signed.

I'm typically one one those guys who likes to protect myself from major let-downs. But, I'm choosing to go all-in on Ron. I don't know, just feelin' it. I'll pay the price later if it doesn't happen. I've been so down on the state of Cal football, I guess I feel like I can take anything at this point...

I think I'm hyping myself up too much, too. Was just looking around Ron's twitter and came across his wife's twitter. Didn't realize but it looks like she went to Cal as well and perhaps it's where they met. She seems like a HUGE fan of Cal. If not this cycle, I sure hope Ron is our HC sometime in the future. They both love and bleed blue and gold.

Isn't the Chancellor's role in this, at least at Cal, to rubber-stamp whoever is chosen by the AD/major doners? Okay, so maybe he might use his veto power if he thought a certain candidate/situation wasn't in the best interests of the University...

[U]Question[/U]: Is there currently an administrator at the University -- somebody between Williams and Dirks in the hierarchy -- who is a MAJOR player in these decisions? If so, somebody who knows, tell us a little bit about them and what they bring to the table.

+1 OTB, except you forgot to re-emphasize the word "lamely" in your final paragraph.

I am a commercial real estate transaction attorney. The vast majority of the companies and people I/we deal with accept scanned copies, with originals to follow via overnight mail. Dirks should not have to be on campus to approve whatever final terms/documents/contracts requiring his consent.

It was very painful. However, I don't think we can say we were #1 because we never were. We were still #2 in the rankings. Had we won, it would be a different story. (Texas would probably be #1 somehow).
