Probably one of the groups that feel empowered by DJT's win.

Did you all know that NYC had a 40k cops and 8.4 million residents, so ~200 residents per cop....Oakland has 800 cops and 400k residents, which is 500 residents per cop. That's 2.5x as many cops per capita in NYC.

Hmm...
Aside from number of cops, Oakland is also one of the worst run departments in the country, headed by one of the worst examples of city buffoonery in the country. I am not anti-police by any means, but Oakland is a poster child of idiotic policing, in the department and out.

OPD's loss of officers in 2009 was a horrible example of how poorly run OPD has been.

The dirt bike riders and ATV riders, and the groups doing the sideshows, are overwhelmingly minorities. Just FYI.

Why does race even come into play. Wrong is wrong. Oakland is only 12-14% AA now down from 44%.

But whatever

You calling me out? I said what I said because someone made a silly post that the riders are feeling empowered by Trump, or something to that effect. Which is silly because, in my experience, the vast majority of the riders are minorities -- and it's a safe bet Trump has nothing to do with how they're acting. I actually disagree with your earlier comment and I stand by my comment that the vast majority of these riders are minorities. I ride, I've seen these dudes plenty with my own eyes, I've scoped out their websites and facebook pages, and it is pretty common knowledge (the CHP certainly knows) the neighborhoods where these dudes live and congregate. That's my personal perspective. Do you ride, going4roses? Please don't accuse me of bringing race into anything, I'm the last person to do that unless it's based in fact or I'm calling out Cyberbears' monster d-b.

I saw different numbers in research piece done by uc Berkeley.

No big deal though it is what it is.

True - your point is still right on, it has dropped significantly in the last 25-30 years, demographics of Oakland have changed.

Oakland starts their cops at 85K per year. NY starts at 35K per year. They get two for one.

Not quite, but there is a differential:

$41,975 a year
New officers in the NYPD receive a starting base salary of $41,975 a year. However, their total salary amounts to $44,744 with the inclusion of holiday pay, uniform allowance and average night-shift differential. Police officers also receive compensation for any overtime they work.

The salary of Oakland officers is another controversial issue. Police Officer Entry Level current annual salary is $69,912 to $98,088, higher than most police positions in California. Additional pay increases are granted to higher-ranking officers. Average total compensation for an OPD employee is $162,000.

That said, I'm not sure why anyone would take issue with a police officer earning a living wage. You think a rookie with a bachelor's degree graduating from the academy should earn less than a school teacher? If so, who exactly do you want carrying a gun, arresting individuals and driving public streets at high speed? You gonna pull over a vehicle in the middle of nowhere at 3am for minimum wage? I'm not.

$70k for a starting salary for Oakland seems perfectly reasonable to me. I WANT our officers well compensated for their work. It would be nice if they could even put down roots in the city. But at that salary, they'll probably never afford to buy anything in a decent neighborhood.

It's also a supply and demand issue. What are the other PDs in the Bay Area offering? Oakland is probably one of the less desirable places to work, unless they're paying top dollar.

That said, the NYPD starting salary does seem low, doesn't it? And last time I checked, living in or near NYC is not exactly super-cheap. I bet Staten Island must be pretty safe, what with all the cops living there, lol. I'm guessing their salaries ramp up pretty quickly over the first few years. Perhaps they have some sort of program where the less experienced cops are given lots of support and still considered "novices" for a while.
