Why? They have LeBron for four years. Just wait the Spurs out and Kawhi will come next summer without having to give up anything.

Waiting is a gamble too. A year ago it was a sure thing Paul George goes to LA. A year ago there was no public hint of Kawhi being unhappy. Plus Lebron isn't getting any younger and has a ton of miles on him. He'll be 34 this coming season and 35 the year that Kawhi could possibly join as a free agent. Lebron has been incredibly durable and has held off declining for an awfully long time but eventually everyone declines, sometimes seemingly overnight.

All good points. If the deal was right, I'd do it now (I'm not sure what that is, but I would do my best to hold onto Ingram, Kuzma, and Ball). I certainly wouldn't give up every non-LeBron asset to get Kawhi a year early. The Spurs have some leverage now, but if you call their bluff and they don't do a reasonable deal, they are going to end up with an unhappy superstar who already sat out one season and will not be interested in pushing himself this coming year, and then will end up with nothing next summer, which would be devastating.

Ball was less than impressive this last season. Had some injuries, not a lot of scoring and had the added stress of LaVar opening his big mouth. I would hate to see the departure of Randle, Kuzma or Ingram. That's the core of this team. I would give them Lonzo, Wagner and a draft choice for Leonard. The Spurs probably want a power forward to replace him and that's Wagner's position. I think James true position is at small forward? The Lakers can probably draft or trade for a point that will hold the place for a highly drafted guard next season.

I don't know, I'm thinking LeBron and the Lakers would love to keep Lonzo Ball, with the exception of if they have a specific line on a superior replacement.

A lot of rookie PGs struggle, their first year or two in the NBA.

I don't disagree with you, but as a Lakers fan it is really nice to be relevant again.

Lakers vs. Warriors will be a replay of Warriors vs Cavaliers. The questions is how the rest of the Lakers roster compares to the assorted Cavaliers teams. They don't have a Kyrie Irving but are arguably better than the 2018 Cav's roster. I think they will compete and have a fighters chance, though they are clearly an underdog.
Not that he's a world beater or anything, but who do the Lakers have besides Lebron that is as good as Kevin Love?

I have lived 51% of my life within 6-10 miles of where the Lakers play.

I have lived 49% of my life within 10-15 miles of where the Warriors play.

Am I Warriors fan or a Lakers fan? I don't know.

I'm kind of rooting for LeBron and am tired of the Warriors.

On the other hand, I want the Warriors to win and am emotionally separated from the Lakers of my childhood that won so many championships.

Also, Steve Kerr is essentially a Cal Bear.

It's not about where you live. There's nothing wrong with not taking a side if you don't really care. Or, in other words, if you have to ask yourself who to root for, it doesn't really matter what the answer is.

I was in elementary school in Los Angeles throughout the '80s. We were *******ed spoiled.

I am sort of interested in the Warriors because one of my good friends is an obsessed NBA fan (I'm not really into basketball) who had an email address with "laker" in it. That person ended up covering the Warriors as a beat reporter through their down years. So I sort of know of all the struggles, even though I didn't follow the team.

I'm not an NBA fan either but the notion that the Warriors signing a head case who has played on only one winning team in a 8 year career and is returning from a career debilitating injury is somehow a bigger deal than the Lakers signing LeBron James is just laughable.

First time, five guys who played in the previous season's All-Star game are playing together since the 1976 Celtics. LeBron signing with LA was a foregone conclusion. Cousins signing with the Warriors was a surprise.

Having said all of that, the James signing is the biggest story of the off-season. It will be interesting to see how kid does playing HS ball for Sierra Canyon....

It is a bigger deal as in the Warriors' roster is so much ridiculously better than any roster in the NBA that they give zero ****'s as to which team has Lebron. Especially when they've taken him down 3 out of 4 times already.

Let us know when your team gets five all-stars in their starting lineup.

The Warriors were great before and they'll still be great. That's clear. The 5 All-Stars narrative is cute and all, but would be significantly more genuine and legitimate absent the injury. If this is hugely newsworthy, it's the news that a guy with no offers or market interest (and a bad rep) found a taker. Isn't there a reason the Pelicans preferred to sign a Lakers castoff than their own "all star?"

As someone who loves Cousins and enjoys watching the Warriors, and hates the Lakers - I think he makes a valid point. No one knows what the Warriors will get from Cousins or when. I'm also wondering how they use him offensively - I'm guessing a lot of high post like they used Bogut. He might not need to be his mobile-self in order to create easy buckets for cutters, and to his 18-footers. Defensively could be another issue.

In all seriousness, I think this and much of the skeptical analysis misses the point. The Warriors aren't looking to get from Cousins what every other team would have looked for. Much of the analysis I've heard seems to evaluate Cousins as a lead dog. I wouldn't sign him as my lead dog. But the Warriors were looking for a decent role player to complement the rest of the All Stars. It is like going to McDonalds and they tell you they are having a $6 special on Filet Mignon. McD's may not make the best Filet Mignon, but you were expecting a Big Mac. It is not like the Warriors are losing an All Star at the position and replacing him with Cousins. Cousins at 75% is an upgrade.

The Warriors just need him in time to fully integrate for the playoffs. He can afford to ease into it even though he expects to be ready for the opener. Frankly, the deal makes a lot of sense for both when you think about it. The Warriors don't care about the first 82. Their young players can get playing time. Cousins is a lot better fit next year for a team that doesn't need to him to get them to the playoffs.

Honestly, the most obvious indicator is the responses from the Warriors' All Stars. They are thrilled. They know basketball, the Warriors, and Cousins better than any of us (and any of the sports media). Their reaction speaks volumes.

Yep. That's exactly right. To answer the earlier question as to why he didn't get any other offers, it's because no one is going to offer him a long term contract with no guarantee he's healthy. But there are a crap load of teams who would absolutely take him for a 1 year mid level exception.

And like oaktown bear said, the dubs only need cousins to be healthy for 1 month out of the season.

And sorry lakers fans, but this news is more important than bron bron to the lakers cause it renders that move (and any other move the lakers try to make) completely moot.

It also guarantees that the lakers won't trade for kawhi this year, cause they know this year is already lost so why give up assets?

Now if kawhi joins the lakers next year, and the dubs don't make any major moves, that would be a big story.

What excites me most about cousins is that it totally throws a wrench in how Houston is trying to beat the dubs.

Houston has the perfect defensive scheme to beat the dubs. And they've been practicing it to the point of near perfection. They basically just switch every on ball and off ball screen.

But how does that work now that the dubs can throw cousins out there? You going to leave cp3 or harden on cousins in the low block? You going to double cousins with Durant, step and klay on the perimeter?

Assuming cousins is healthy, I just don't see how Houston's defensive scheme can work anymore. Which is sad (for them) since they've spent so much time and money formulating the perfect scheme and getting the perfect players to run that scheme with the sole focus of beating the warriors. Sad

Spot on here. The Warriors do not need Cousins right away...They need him by next May/June for the playoffs....So they get to pay him less...He in turn gets time to heal, and the Warriors get an exceptional complementary player for their time of need....Win, win, win..

On the one hand I agree with you, on the other hand the Warriors averaged 107 per game against Houston so it's not like they completely got shut down. The Warriors certainly struggled offensively the first two games after Iguodala got hurt, but it's unclear to me whose adjustments will be the difference maker in 2019. I do think Iguodala's impact goes down every year but so does CP3's.

The issues with Cousins are more in the defensive end. When Houston gets Harden or Paul isod on him how will he hold up? Will he get lost in team defense schemes and/or just not bother in transition defense?

Offensively I think he gets David West's role. Run some of the 2nd unit offense thru him. He'll actually probably be the 4th best 3 point shooter on the team and creates interesting spacing options when out with the starters.

That's a two way street. Will Houston be able to switch everyone with a healthy Boogie on offense? I don't see Harden or CP3 doing much to stop Boogie.

Anyone other than Capela is going to get mauled by Boogie.

Signing Cousins was a smart move, and it might pay off. Didn't cost a lot. That said, recovering from an Achilles tear is never sure thing. Achilles injuries effectively has killed a few careers. Given the social and team issues Cousins bring, who knows. One thing is likely however, Cousins in a 1 year rental if he plays well. Coming off injury he needs a season to show value. The Lakers did the right thing waiting. They can sign Cousins if he can still play.

As for Leonard, I'd wait a year for free agency. That way the Lakers give up nothing. Sending all those players to the Spurs on a trade makes no sense because it will kill depth and the future. LBJ with Leonard and all that young talent should make them contenders and give them ability to attract quality role players.

The back story there is animosity toward Randle's agent. Same agent as D'angelo and PG13. Randle didn't wantt to be there, he asked out from the Lakers and they obliged. He's got some great skillsets, great ballhandler for a big, good on post up, can drive to hoop, very athletic but he can't shoot and his D is really bad, his metrics stink.
