The Cal Alma Mater is "All Hail Blue and Gold". It needs to be played sooner. I hate that Bay Area fans have "gone LA", leaving the game early, etc.

In my perfect world, at the end of the game, the team would join the Band for "Fight for California", "All Hail" and "Palms of Victory" (after a win), or "Sons of California" (after a loss).

Yep. Since the team now generally comes over and joins them for Fight, I think the band should just go immediately into All Hail right after, and have the team stay for it.

BTW - I believe that was the *origjnal* tradition of All Hail after games. The business of playing it for the Alumni side I believe only dates to the late 60s. Students no longer wanted to sing it or stay around for it- but alums on the other side did. So the band quit playing it from the stands rightbafter and made it the first post game song on the field for the alums instead.

That time frame is also when they started finishing the post game concert with the full Lights Out March version of the fight song, and I think for the same reason. The alums of that era had mostly been on campus in the 30s, 40s and 50s, when the band did pregame marching from the south end to the north. They'd enter to the full "Hail to California Fanfare" and march up field playing the Lights Out March. At about the 40 yard line they'd hit the end of the intro lower their instruments, and sing Fight for California - with the whole stadium joining in!! Ever wonder why the lsju band has an alternative version of the lyrics? Well that's why. They had to have something to drown it out!

Anyway- alums of that generation loved hearing the full Lights Out March version for that reason. To them it was memories of the full stadiums of their youth, watching the Thunder Team and the Waldorf teams. Now it's just a "tradition" that people do by rote. Why it once mattered to people is long forgotten. So many of our traditions are now like that- time for some new ones I'd say. Or in the case of when to play the alma mater, maybe a return to an even older tradition that I'd say was much better.
I would love to see at Hail to California done before the National Anthem. That would be chicken skin a la Rock Chalk Jayhawk and would set the tone for the game. Next would be getting fans/students to get to CMS early.

I would love a California Uber Alles chant.
Geez man, please retract.

Wikipedia:
During the Nazi era, only the first stanza was used, followed by the SA song "Horst-Wessel-Lied".[8] The anthem was played at occasions of great national significance such as the opening of the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin when Hitler and his entourage, along with Olympic officials, walked into the stadium amid a chorus of three thousand Germans singing "Deutschland, Deutschland ber alles". In this way, the first verse of the anthem became closely identified with the Nazi regime.[9]

He's referencing a Dead Kennedys song - anti-authoritarian, anti-fascist, anti-governor Jerry Brown (act 1). Not a good candidate for feel-good stadium singalong.

Understood, and i guarantee that will make for terrible optics, because the only thing anyone will hear are the echoes of a nazi stadium chant.
Deutschland Uber Aller is not a nazi hymn, it was composed by Haydn in the 18th century, adopted by the Weimar Republic and the Federal Republic of Germany, and of course still used today as the national hymn. They've dropped the first two stanzas though. The first one had a pretty expansive early 20th century German homeland geography, while the second one, which praised German women and wine, was fairly innocuous.

Objectively speaking, it's one of the very best national hymns out there.

We Will Rock You"

Buddy you're a boy make a big noise
Playin' in the street gonna be a big man some day
You got mud on yo' face
You big disgrace
Kickin' your can all over the place
Singin'

We will we will rock you
We will we will rock you

Buddy you're a young man hard man
Shoutin' in the street gonna take on the world some day
You got blood on yo' face
You big disgrace
Wavin' your banner all over the place

We will we will rock you
(Sing it!)
We will we will rock you

Buddy you're an old man poor man
Pleadin' with your eyes gonna make you some peace some day
You got mud on your face
Big disgrace
Somebody better put you back into your place

We will we will rock you

How about a California anthem of some sort:
California Dreamin
Goin back to Cali (Biggie or Cool J)
Anything from the Beach Boys
California Love
California Sun (the Rivieras)

Lots that aren't quite appropriate (Dead Kennedys, Eagles, Doors, Chili Peppers, Dre, Cal Drinking Song)
There's got to be a cross-generational, feel-good, stadium-friendly song someone can find.

The kids would never get it.

Side a white mare in the footsteps of dawn

Tryin' to find a woman who's never, never, never been born.

Telling myself it's not as hard, hard, hard as it seems

Meh, as long as nobody else in the P12 does it, I'm cool with it.

We're ripping off a team that's not only pro (not college) but in a different SPORT, for crying out loud. At that point, it's not a ripoff, it's paying homage (to an incredibly cool tradition at Fenway).

And it's certainly cooler than furd's stupid use of "All Right Now".
Completely agree with all point. Paying homage to Fenway fans is not lazy, it's actually pretty cool.

Why? Legitimate question. They seem like a bunch of boorish louts, to me. (I claim ignorance though. Never been to a game there. And no, I'm not a Yankees fan... born and raised Giants.)

Hotel California is kind of chill and slow, which is OK because the chorus would be killer if the whole stadium did it together. And of course a great, relevant title. This is in the lead for me.

Someone should make a tally of the best ideas and put together a poll. Then we should submit this thread/poll to athletics. We have to hurry; not many home games left. And why wait until next year? This is not exactly hard to implement.

Thinking about those songs, it's generally only the chorus that everyone sings loud, anyway. So, yeah: Hotel California, Good Vibrations, there are plenty that would work. Or how about Lyin' Eyes? People can holler the chorus at the top of their lungs and has a nice message: You can't hide from the fact that we just whupped your a$$. Or for more of an East Bay twist, how about What Is Hip by Tower of Power?

True -- we would have to get the verses in quick to get to the chorus though during the 3rd/4th quarter break.

Another thing I noticed about the Wisconsin Jump Around thing is that the scoreboard showed them smashing someone every time, including the beat down of Nebraska and then showing Melvin Gordon rushing for an NCAA record of more than 400+ yards.

We are the Champions is even a better, more melodic song (I like how Queen combines both), but probably too much woofing to do it as a tradition since we hardly are ever champions lol (not since 1958 ugh).

If we're going the Queen route, then why not Fat Bottomed Girls.

And for the record . . . crowd singing together is awesome. Piped in music and Sweet Caroline are weak. I still get chills, when we have the opportunity to go with Bear Territory. For me, that's good enough. It's tradition and its unique to Cal and its AWESOME.

I didn't read every reply so apologies if this is a repeat.
But why does Marketing feel like it has to copy what other people do at other places?

Thank goodness they got rid of that 3rd down bell!
As it was happening I was thinking why are they playing Sweet Caroline? This seems so out of place. It isn't our thing.
Palms Of Victory is only played when we win and only after the game is over.
It would be great if the Cal Band could come up with something along the lines of Ohio State's Hang On Sloopy.

You know, someone (above) suggested something "California" based and suggested something by the Beach Boys might work. Just thinking' here, but "California Girls" would, I betcha, get some interesting responses if the band performed it at the beginning of each 4th quarter, like Ohio State's "Hang on Sloopy" or UW's "Tequila". I like the Beach Boys, but they sound much too "Southern California" to me. "California Girls" is clearly about SOUTHERN California girls. I understand that there are many students from SoCal who come to Berkeley, but the song should be something with more of a Bay Area flavor.

Hang on Sloopy, 1964, the McCoys, lead guitarist Rick Derringer. Played lead guitar on Edgar Winter's White Trash album. 1974 he played his then hit song Jump, Jump, Jump at Day on the Green with CSN&Y headlining with The Band:

We need a song that is also not inappropriate. Lots of the Green Day, Chili Peppers, etc wouldn't work for a family setting. Hotel California is iconic, but there's nothing about those lyrics that in anyway tie to the occasion other than the name California. Originally the song was going to be named Mexican Reggae.

How about before the game? I've told the story several times about the '92 Citrus Bowl, and how the stadium was asked to remain standing for The Clemson University Alma Mater (that's what it's called, actually); naturally, all of the Cal section sat in disgust. But thinking about it 25 years later, it would make 100 times more sense to play "Hail to California" before the game, after the Star Spangled Banner.

The qualities for a song of the type you want are these: it has to be simple; it has to be upbeat; it has to be fun to sing.

Uptown Funk - upbeat, fun, but hard to sing in parts.
Hotel California - well known, easy to sing, not particularly upbeat or fun.
Margaritaville - passes all three tests, but bad optics because of the alcohol tie in. Also, not quite "Cal"
I Feel Good - passes all the tests, but frequently used as a between innings fan-cam song at MLB parks.
Friends in Low Places - See Margaritaville
Good Vibrations - Fun, upbeat, too hard to sing
Fat Bottomed Girls - Passes all the tests, but be prepared to sell it as an anthem of body positivity in response to the howls of outrage that will come.
Start Me Up - upbeat, fun, but hard to sing in parts.
The Hokey Pokey, YMCA, and other songs that are banned from wedding receptions - No - just no
We Are the Champions - Done to death
Shout - Done to death, frequently used as a between innings fan-cam song at MLB parks
Uptown Girl - Sorta passes all three tests
Freeway of Love - Sorta passes all three tests
The Brady Bunch Theme and the Flintstones theme - woulda worked great 20 years ago
The Cal Drinking Song - It's have to be an abridged version - not so much for bad content (there is the booze tie in again) but it goes on forever.
California Gurls - (Katie Perry) upbeat, fun, hard to sing in parts.
Goin Back to Cali - Kind of a dated reference at this point.
California Girls - (Beach Boys) Dated, but meets the three part test. Hey - not all of the California Girls of which they sing are from south of Big Sur!
