1. Cal lost to UCLA (we get no bowl, and UCLA hires the Chipster)

2. Stanford wins

3. The Cougs, my second favorite team, get blown out at the Apple Cup, which means:

4. The PAC-12 championship will go to either the Trojans or the Cardinal.

It just doesn't get any worse than this.

Gotta wonder how much of this is a private vs public school thing. Hate to see it, but the private universities seem to be on top lately.

Accurate data from which I form gross generalizations: from my high school, the wealthy smart kids went to Stanford, the wealthy, not-so-smart kids went to SC. Is it all about endowment, tight public funding, size of donor groups, or what? Yes, I've got my ignorant biases, but would like to understand what is really going on.

Last year, the publics were in the championship.

In every other league (ACC, Big Ten, Big-12, SEC) the major players are public schools, the only notable outliers are Notre Dame (which is its own animal), Miami and TCU.

Good points. I am mostly thinking about the PAC12, and the state of California in particular.

At least we have good coaches for once.

Actually, it does get worse than this, much worse. In 1992 over the space of a month Bruce Snyder left Cal for ASU and Bill Walsh came back to Stanford. I was disconsolate.

I had a great weekend:

1. Spent time with my adult children;
2. Goff won;
3. ND lost (I don't think about the pr#cks that beat them);
4. Elway's team lost (I don't think about the pr#cks that beat them);
5. I watched The Accountant again (can't see it enough times);
6. tRump is getting progressively agitated (MAGA = Mueller Ain't Going Away);
7. Jimmy looked pretty good for the Niners (not a Niner fan but feel sorry for them)

Agreed. Elway burning the Broncos franchise to the ground is some seriously enjoyable schadenfreude.

8. NZ All Blacks beat Wales and were once again named Rugby Team of the Year
9. Fresno State Bulldogs and JT taking on Boise State (after they beat them Saturday) for MW Championship!

In blue states, private is better. In red states, public is better.

Furd went 0 for 3 in the PK80 tourney and just took a 9 point loss against Portland State.

And Cuonzo just blew a 13 point lead with less than 5 mins to play.

So it's not all bad.

?? True in many cases, and I may have misunderstood, but several counter-examples just off the top of my head:

Blue State: Washington (UW has been the dominant football school, made it to the playoffs last year).
Blue State: Oregon (UO has been the dominant football school, has made it to the playoff finals).
Blue/Purple State: Virginia (Virginia Tech has been the dominant football school).
Blue/Purple State: Colorado (Colorado and Colorado State are not great football schools, but this year both are better than Air Force per Sagarin).
Blue State: Maryland (Maryland is not a great football school but what private is better in Maryland?).
Blue State: New Mexico (ditto Maryland, except UNM and NMSU are even worse, but what private in New Mexico is better?).

Red State: Indiana (Notre Dame, private has been the dominant football school).
Red/Purple State: Florida (Miami, private could be the best team right now, though perhaps it's UCF and historically Florida State and Florida may have been better).

BYU (private) is not very good right now but historically may have been the best team in Utah (Red State).

Agree, it doesn't. At least neither of them will make it to the Four National Championship games.

Private vs. public is not a big deal in college football, or sports in general. Other than Stanford winning whatever the name of that cup is by dominating Olympic sports. No, the real inequity is in high school. In California in particular (and also noticeably in Ohio and New Jersey) the private schools dominate. Look at the best football teams in California and nearly all are Catholic schools. On a national scale the best basketball teams are primarily private schools.

Actually, I agree. SC has ridden the respect from their athletics and other non-traditional programs to a much higher overall academic level. I watched it happen. A lesson for us?

Does USC still cheat by artificially combining their SAT scores from different tests?
