He appears to be a bright, young guy who knows sports. His choice of Greg Schiano to replace Butch Davis was undermined by a local radio guy named Clay Travis. Those who listened to Travis tweeted and called the AD's office to condemn the choice. A public surge erupted all directed at Currie saying he didn't get a guy that could return Tennessee to greatness. In a nutshell, they didn't like Schiano and they didn't like their AD making the choice without putting out a trial balloon first. This, at least, is my understanding of the circumstances. For all I know Fullmer may have been behind the move to push Currie out??? Where is Dark Reverie to help us understand the situation?

He would be a fantastic hire for Cal, which pretty much ensures he won't be hired. Because Cal is Cal, which is to say book smart and sports uber-stupid.

Currie is more likely to go to Wazzu, whose new president was the president at Kansas State when Currie was the AD there.

Damn, I didn't think to think that Clay Travis would basically incite the outrage*. He's a national guy, by the way, who's on local radio. He was a liberal left-wing guy who found that stoking the right got a lot of hits.


(*I knew he was outraged. I denounced him in another thread because his primary shtick is to denounce "internet mobs" like the one that brought down the L.A. Clippers owner, yet here he is leading an internet mob. But I forgot to think how influential he'd be in his outrage.)

That's Fulmer's spin on things. I'll be he does remarkably better with a program that isn't stabbing him in the back at every turn.

Whereas Cal's administration will just cut him off at the knees.

Since Cal does not have those kinds of personalities around Currie might be fine, but his coaching "search" was following Jimmy Haslam's orders to get Schiano, which then blew up spectacularly because the fans hated it.

He was just hired at UT and Fulmer was pissed it was not him. He was hired this year to replace the football coach. Fulmer lobbied for the job himself. Now he has it....

But I am sure Fulmer was not the source of all of the back-channel stabbings in the back of Currie.

Of course, on the radio today on ESPNU Danny Kannel was talking about how Fulmer totally undermined Currie through this process. He as the one who supposedly got Travis to rail against Schiano, etc.

Fulmer is all around Knoxville, still lives there, is on campus all the time, etc. He thinks he owns the place.

Rushin to judgement

I think Cal needs someone who knows college football and how to build a program and a traditional AD for all the other sports. The football guy would make more money than the AD and report to Christ. We are not going to find someone good at both in one person. And we need football to succeed or the AD budget is blown to smithereens. Let's set the precedent.
