For those who want to be further disenchanted by the state of college athletics, I highly recommend ESPN The Magazine's new story on the relationship between Louisville and Adidas.

Remarkable story too about the KFC Yum Arena. Basically, taxpayers funded (most of) it and Louisville gets to keep all the revenue.

What is troubling to me is at Wyking was working there under Pitino for quite some time (5 years?).
I'm sorry, but I can't believe payments to players were only known by some assistants, and not all of them on staff. Too hard to keep that a secret IMO.

I would also find it unbelievable that ANY coach on a staff is not aware of what is going on. When Wyking came to Cal it seemed like a step down to me - and I've always wondered why.

  • Was he pushed out by Pitino or Louisville?
  • Did he see no more opportunity at a program that had recently played for the Natl Champ?
  • Was he bored?
  • Was he sick of Kentucky and pining for the west?
  • Was he not comfortable about what was going on and looking to get out?

Fun to ponder, but I'm pretty sure we'll never know the truth until it is irrelevant. I wouldn't go so far as to let it trouble you, though.

If I'm involved in paying players, I would limit the number of people knowing. You only need one to know; therefore, i would limit it to one coach.

What struck me is how commercial it all is. They play at KFC Yum Arena and Papa Johns Stadium. Not saying it's good or bad. But it can't see the 4 CA schools reaching that level.

Inspector Jacques Clouseau Anonymity is a virtue. Every fool knows that. Anonymity's next to cleanliness and I don't have to tell you what that's next to.

I have no prpoblem with the sponsorship of college venues. Heck, UW has sold naming rights to both the football stadium and the basketball pavilion.

This is all part of the march towards fully commercializing all aspects of college sports. Then, I hope we can finally cross the Rubicon of paying the athletes.

P.S. I believe that SC is on the road to selling naming rights to tthe Coliseum.

You're right. They sold to United back in May it appears. They're keeping "Memorial Coliseum" in the name. Guess we've just all been a bit behind in the west coast. Would be a nice cash infusion for our very cash strapped department....

I don't really have an issue with sponsorship rights either, though in my ideal world, i'd prefer it not exist like it does elsewhere (eg Euro soccer). I like that American uniforms, by and large, have resisted putting a corporate logo on them.

The Louisville financing situation goes far beyond sponsorship though. The notion that the financing for a stadium or arena could come from taxpayers while the benefits/revenue accrue to the university is mind-boggling. I sure wish we had that kind of deal to rebuild CMS. Actually, I don't in principle...but our own situation sure would look a lot rosier.

Taxpayers should not subsidize costs associated with the building of any stadiums, pro or college.

it's like micro 101. it's only an advantage to cheat if not everybody cheats. if everybody cheats or has the same capacity to cheat (pay players), then it's all nonsense. I guess the current model is that people cheat unequally (we're probably on the short end of that stick). Without any proof or evidence, I get the feeling that Monty was clean and CCM was on the other side of the spectrum.

That being said, if everybody's cheating, then I really don't have a problem with playing by the same rules as the big boys. Just the cost of doing business, I suppose.

Let's get rid of the one and done already. Let them go to the G League (formerly D League) or go to Europe/China like the Balls

It's not just the arena, either. The ESPN article mentions some very shady-sounding transfers of real estate that might be underhanded ways of transferring university assets to the athletic department.

Essentially, Jurich ran the Louisville athletic department like a pro sports franchise that takes advantage of public money every chance it gets, with the endorsement of a university president who put a far greater priority on athletics than academics.

That was what Kabam Field at California Memorial Stadium was all about.

Yeah, but that's different: Pretty hard NOT to make the tie-in there... The Trojans Coliseum

Wyking's wife is from Berkeley and his sister-in-law is faculty.
