...backs out of her promise to give the commencement speech this year due to striking service workers at the UC who already make 10 - 20 % above market average.

I hope this year's graduates remember that when political opportunity arose, Harris chose to break her commitment. This is the definition of character.

Kamala is bailing less than a week from Commencement. Carol Christ to save the day! It must be upsetting for her to scramble to find a replacement but I'm sure she'll step in and do a wonderful job. By the way, she's on a roll.

Commencement is one week away. There is not enough time to find a replacement. Carol Crist will deliver the commencement address herself. I hope a part of her message to new graduates will be to grow a spine and keep your promises.

Hanky it is this Saturday not a week away. You a Berkeley grad? Just kidding but yes Carol would be fine. She has balls....

Not surprised to see Kamala watching out for her primary constituency the public employee unions. Never mind the taxpayers who pay her salary, benefits and pensions.

If only Cal were holding a Sanctuary Graduation I am sure she would show....

Harris is a wimp without a spine. What an embarrassment to have her as a U.S. Senator.

I hope this year's graduates remember that when political opportunity arose, Harris chose to break her commitment. This is the definition of character.

Uh huh. Trump had a 40-year history of ripping off vendors, lenders, employees, and investors. Millions of people voted for him anyway.

Certainly, the character or reputation of a candidate does't matter to patriots.

Truly, the most interesting thing about this is seeing grown adults pretend to be offended. Fake outrage is so left and right, you'd think the entire board were sophomore safe space seekers.

I only remember a graduation ceremony for my major. I see that Robert Reich spoke in my graduating year. I never knew that - didn't know who he was at the time anyway - wouldn't have cared.

Labor peace is sacrosanct in the California Democratic Party. Berkeley knew the risk of low-balling the members of AFSME Local 3299. There was no way that Kamala Harris could appear at Commencement during an ongoing labor dispute. The University negotiating strategy put her in a terrible position and she rightly canceled.

I know that some here have problems with unions. All I can say is this: many in this economy have been forced by employers to do work harder without commensurate increases in compensation. Organized workers do not think it is acceptable to work more for less.
Patience is a virtue, but I’m not into virtue signaling these days.

Unions vote, endorse candidates and provide funding/campaign support. Students generally don't do any of those things consistently or in an organized way. Seems like basic political calculus. Yes, it's disappointing but it's reality and no one smart dumps on their base. I'm fine with Sen. Harris' general policy position. Wish this didn't happen but what else can you say to the students? "Welcome tor reality. It often sucks and disappoints, get use to it." A nicer send off would be better but so would lower student debt and being able to afford a house in the future. YMMV.
