Horrible. My worst fear as a parent.

Best advice from one who was an older parent: Whenever you enter any acreage with water present and you are with a young child, the foremost thought in your mind should be: My kid could drown here if I get distracted.

The thing is if you're like me you think it will be loud and splashy and obvious if your child goes underwater. But it's not, it's deathly quiet, no splashing no sounds, nothing. It happened once right in front of me with our youngest son when he was little. He slipped under water and it took me a moment to recognize it and bring him up again. Very scary.

So sad for this tragic loss.

Excruciating for Bode and family. Grief and guilt beyond comprehension. Sincere condolences to them and their family.

Excellent points above. To drive the point home more, everyone should read the Slate article below. You will be a amazed:

Awful.

A couple years back I was two feet from my oldest as he was clinging to the side of the pool. He lost his grip and went under. I got to him in about a second, but I saw first hand how quickly he went under and how quiet it was.

I now have an almost 4 year old and a 21 month old. We spent a weekend recently at a house with a pool with a lot of people. There was a lot going on and my wife and I could never relax. Every time one of us left the pool area we made sure the other knew.

This sad story reinforces my instinct to not be in that situation again. My heart goes out to Morgan and Bode.

I do not intend to suggest your linked article is not helpful, because it is - but I do want to point out that it is relevant to the drowning of adults and children quite a bit older than the Millers' 19-month old.

As others have pointed out, this tragedy was entirely preventable. Maybe because the Millers are both outstanding athletes, they mistakenly misjudged what their toddler's capability was in the water?

The twitter post called out that the toddler "passed away." With respect, that is very misleading: Their child died due to carelessness at best, and negligence at worst. Horrible.

Hate to say it, but you are right. I've known Morgan for over a decade, and this while shocking, does not surprise me. I normally would have refrained from posting, however, she (and husband) has chosen a public life, and to publicly post about this incident on social media.

RIP to the little girl and condolences to the family no matter what.

You think she thought that a 19 month old baby could swim on her own? And she thought this because she is a good athlete? 19 month old babies can't swim on their own without a parent (and even then, "swim" would be loosely defined)

Usually infants of that age are dressed in floating devices to protect against drowning. That said, we don't know the facts to draw conclusions on blame.

serious question: Why have they set up a GoFundMe page claiming they need money for hospital bills in addition to funeral costs?

The gofundme seems a bit shameless or tasteless but who knows, maybe they really are in need.

The loss of the child is beyond tragic, just horrible. So sad.
