71Bear, Cal is not a second tier football school under Coach Wilcox and the kids they have identified and recruited are not second tier recruits.
I share the other posters questions about the ratings of many of the Cal kids and expect some ratings to improve by their senior year and more importantly expect many of our kids to outplay the rating.
It depends on your standard for Tier One...
Here is mine:
Alabama
Clemson
Florida State
LSU
Notre Dame
Oklahoma
USC
Ohio State
Texas
Penn State
Michigan
Georgia
If you think Cal belongs in that group, well, I guess we will have to agree to disagree.
Cal is in the vast middle class of college football....
What about Nebraska, Tennessee and Florida? Okay, they have been a little down lately, but then so has Texas. If they're not in Tier One, how many tiers do you have, because I'd put them in a higher tier than Cal. (UW also in higher tier).
Maybe there's five tiers and Cal's in Tier Three. Hey. maybe our new t-shirts could read "STRIVING TOWARDS TIER TWO!"
Great question...
Nebraska - They were definitely top tier under Devaney and Osborne. However, they lost their way after they fired Solich. Now they wander in the vast middle class. Will Frost restore the luster?
Tennessee - a great history dating back to Gen. Neyland. However, they completely went off the rails after Fulmer was fired. Now that he is back (albeit as the AD), TN could restore the glory. Is Pruitt another Saban protege success like Smart?
What is interesting is the similarity in the TN and NE narratives - fire a good coach who was responsible for a solid program because they are hoping for more. Both programs lost their way, and now, after hiring a wunderkind, are hoping for a return to the good ol' days.
Florida - zero tradition, before Spurrier (the player) did they even have a program? Heck, without Tebow, they have done nothing to warrant inclusion at the top tier table. In essence, a flash across the college football sky. Nothing more...
Stewart Mandel's model is four tiers. He has Cal in tier three. I would like to think of the Bears as a tier two program. If not today, certainly in a couple years - Wilcox has things headed in the right direction....
