As a bit of a surprise, the wife and kids expressed interest in joining me Sat night, realizing we won't get home until about 1 am... Wow. It's my b-day on Sunday, so I imagine that is the impetus. A heck of a gift that can only be topped by a Cal victory!

Curious... where can one see what's available at the Cal CMS concessions? My wife has gone vegetarian somewhat recently, so I'm hoping there will be some options for her. I'm sure there must be... Honestly, I have not purchased food or drink in CMS since I was a kid!

Thanks for the help

That map was from cal bears.com in the football gameday guide. There are vegetarian options, including cheese pizza, although the map doesn't really tell you that.

Thank you very much. Figured there would be cheese pizza; and it sounds like there are other options as well. I'll try to figure-out what those are... Our seats are very near an Oski's Place. Thanks again.

Are any of the vendors doing the turkey bacon wrapped vege brats this year?
How about the taco salad bowl?

My concessions is drink beer or soda during the game and eat a million things I've missed in Berkeley before and after the game.

I've been tailgating before the games, grilling Evergood hot links, but at that time of day, with my wife going vegetarian, figured it best to just eat inside CMS. Hoping there are at least a couple veggie options....

I'm pretty sure I have seen veggie options at some of the stands. The On the Lighter Side concession had some IIRC--the graphic posted above shows a salad but I believe there may have been other options as well.

From the Director of Events & Conferences:

Hi Cal89,

We have the following options:

  • hummus and pita chips at the following locations: stand #329 (Gridiron Grill), #347 (Oski's Place), #377 (Oski's Place), #386 (End Zone Grill), #393 (Oski's Place)
  • macaroni and cheese at stand #355 (Bear BBQ)
  • kale & cranberry salad, southwest quinoa bowl, california veggie sandwich, fruit cup, hummus at stand #355 (on the lighter side)

Enjoy the game, and Go Bears!

One piece of advice: don't get the boba drinks.
Worst boba I've ever had.
Tried it on the first game of the season when we had perfect warm weather. My friend ordered two boba teas, and what they gave us was so bad neither of us finished it.
Boba balls were overcooked. Tea was mildly warm and had no ice like we requested. Drink itself had a mild fizziness to it which I've never had in any of my boba drinks.
Plus I made a joke about their red straws...and they didn't get it as they thought I was giving them a hard time about plastic straws, and not the fact that they were red...

There's always Cafe Intermezzo. Yes, I know there are practical considerations. I hope your pre-birthday events end with a resounding victory!

Never heard of Boba before. Good to know.

Trying to have this night game go smoothly for the family so that they might want to go again...

Eat before you get to the stadium. Last game I ordered a Schwartz sausage at the end of the third quarter. Barely warm and bun stale. All for $10.00. Not worth it. Won't go that route again.

What's the story with Evergood? They seem to get high marks from respected board members. Very curious to try one out.

The game is at 7:30 so there's plenty of time, and what place in Berkeley doesn't carry a veggie option. Then you only have to worry about veggie snacks at Memorial, which is easy.

Good input and points everyone, thanks.

First, Evergood makes my favorite hot links. Have tried quite a few over the years, and that's all I get now. They can be bought at Safeway and Costco, so easy to get...

We park at Lower Hearst. I'll start checking the restaurants in that area. If you have any recommendations, do share. As a student, I didn't venture much in that area...

I've always been suspicious of the quality too, so my plan would also be to eat somewhere around town instead.

But the map is interesting.....since I've never eaten anything at CMS in all my visits there, I had no idea they even had this many choices. I always figured most college stadiums were hot dogs and nachos only.

Lavals has good pizza. There is also a burrito place innthat coutyard on euclid along with a bar that sells some foods. Across the street is Bongo Burger and Ceilas Mexican food. Lavals is y favorite puzza. thin crust and just the right amount of cheese. Order a mini and you get a free drink for less than $10.00.

Totally forgot about LaVal's Pizza.. Right there by the LH garage...

But.... I'm leaning toward some roast duck at the moment.

Someone should put together a brief guide to which Chinese restaurants in Berkeley serve duck. Sadly King Dong on Shattuck is not one of them.

King Dong is a Korean-Chinese place. Only place I could get my jajangmyun fix back in the day.

If Korean BBQ, I'd be quite interested... Would like to stay north side though.

If you are a Bank of the West customer, show some proof like a ATM card, and they will give you $10 coupon good for certain food concessions at CMS. You can collect $20 if both you and your spouse are BW customers!
They have a tent on the Plaza. Free Cal "Go Bears" lanyards too even if your not a BW client!
They were not around last season at CMS and Haas Pavilion, but returned again this season for CMS!

No it's not. These are the three staples of Korean-Chinese food:

Jajangmyun

Jangpong

Tangsooyook

Forget the game. Let's go eat!

Koreatown in Oakland is just down Telegraph, from the 20s to 30s street. I'm sure you guys will find what you're looking for there.

Looks very yummy KAB!

My wife is actually Taiwanese. Apparently the Aki Japanese restaurant has some Taiwanese cuisine. There's a Rare Tea in Cory Hall, but not open on the weekends...

I think I found enough options to make sure she'll eat well, and the kids.

EDIT/ADD: Aki is closed on Saturdays....

This, but I would actually stop at a few of my favorites and bring it all into the stadium to munch on during the game. Me and my buddies would spread out around Durant/Telegraph and all get a bunch of random stuff and share throughout the game. IB's cheese curly fries is a must for me. Don't even mind them soggy later in the game. Have a great time and happy birthday!

Thanks for sharing llyn, and the well-wishes.

I seem to recall doing something like that once or twice before. No sure I'd want to hassle with such these days with security and the limited amount of stuff we can bring into CMS, using small clear bags. It's a night game of course, and it will be somewhat cool. I was even asked to consider bringing a blanket or two! With the usual binoculars, small bags of chips, my corn nuts, sealed bottles of water, space will be at a premium...

When I'd go to games with my roommate, including many after graduation, the routine was to start at Blondies, each with a slice of pepperoni, and finishing-up before arrival at Top Dog (doable). There, I'd always get a hot and New York (now gone) and dust those off during the stroll to CMS. On the way back, generally if we won, we'd do the inverse, finishing the two dogs before getting to Blondies being the goal (not easy). That's still the routine for when he can attend games with me...

Cramming greasy food in the mouth while walking the streets of Berkeley elicits fond memories. The wife doesn't see it that way at all, lol.

Quick question, do they have beer in the general concessions area now?

asking a very important question for a friend

I love the tension that older Cal fans have between the nostalgic greasy alcoholic game day diet they remember from back in the day and the healthier/more "gourmet" concessions they must make for accompanying spouses and kids.

No. Only in the ESP section and in a beer garden in the plaza over the high performance center which is open through the end of the 3rd quarter, I believe. Can't take beer out of that area.

Is the beer garden free for all? or ESP only?

The 1 lb Evergood kielbasa with grilled onions and peppers at AT&T Park is the only dog that surpasses Top Dog for me and it's not even close, IMO.

There are a pair of Evergood stands on the East side, though only the one on the Northeast side has a bigger selection and none of them are the same as the massive AT&T keilbasa.

Another place you can't go wrong is the many carts on Piedmont selling bacon wrapped sausages with grilled onions and peppers, both before and after the game.
