I only regret that I have but one like to give for this post.Beardog26 said:
1986. I was a senior co-captain, with Hardy Nickerson and Doug Riesenberg. Senior day. My final game wearing a Cal football uniform.
We were more than 10 point underdogs and Furd/Toi Cook had been smugly predicting victory all week. We had six sacks and beat Furd 17-11 to knock them out of a bowl game and conclude my football playing career on a beautiful fall Saturday in Strawberry Canyon/Memorial Stadium.
Steve Hendrickson and I carried Joe Kapp (his final game, too, a few weeks after ZipperGate) around the field on our shoulders through the frenzied students and alumni rushing the field after the game, and Hardy Nickerson climbed the director's ladder to lead the band in raucous post-game Cal fight songs. The locker room had crazy energy and the party lasted a couple nights.
One of my favorite life memories! Go Bears!!
I'd like to put in a few words for a sentimental favorite of mine, the 2003 game. Not flashy, but meaningful. First Big Game away victory I saw, after several losses. Bears go into the game needing a win to get bowl eligibility (after being denied their bowl appeal in 2002), then proceed to play the absolute worst first half they could possibly play. Surprisingly, only down 10-0. I turn to my wife and say "We're winning this game by ten points." Bears roar back in the second half, win comfortably 28-16, and the petty part of me loved watching Chris Lewis finish his furd QB career taking meaningless snaps while having to listen to the Bear Territory chant in his own house.
Also a shoutout to TC Ostrander, who took an absolute mauling in the 2004 Big Game. Amazing that he kept getting up.
