Big Game and air quality

Any news on what, if anything, Cal will do to ensure the health of both the team and fans in Memorial Stadium this Saturday? Air quality has been mostly red the last few days around the bay area, and not likely to drastically improve until rain mid/late next week.

This is especially important since there are so many families with young ones who go to Cal games.

From Cal Athletics:

"Using the Air Quality Index (AQI) as a guide, Cal and its sports medicine staff are following guidelines established by the NCAA Sports Science Institute and the Pac-12 Health and Well Being Board to determine whether to continue planned competitions and practices.

The AQI can fluctuate as conditions change, and if it reaches levels where physical exertion is considered dangerous, we will take appropriate measures, including postponing or cancelling events, if necessary.

Cal Athletics has been following AQI levels since the wildfires started last week. As of 9:30 a.m. Thursday, we have not seen AQI numbers that require postponement of Saturday's Big Game. We will continue to monitor and will provide updates through the scheduled kickoff.

Members of the campus community, particularly those with pre-existing respiratory conditions, such as asthma, heart or lung disease, should take appropriate steps to limit exposure outdoors."

https://calbears.com/news/2018/11/15/athletics-news-air-quality-update.aspx

It would be nice if they'd say what air quality index level will necessitate postponement. Berkeley is currently at 192, which is very high. Is 200 the threshold? Or as Oskidunker implied, ticket sales?

UC Davis cancelled classes. SJSU cancelled classes. Cal is sandwiched right in the middle of those two schools, yet classes have yet to be cancelled even though aqi worse here ar 197. 200 means classes cancelled according to Cal

Why would fifferent universities have different standards?

Never mind, I feel like a dick now. For what it's worth, here is what one of my friends on a team told me just today when i asked him about the quality of the air:

Holy hell...AQ in Chico is 365. Over 300 is hazardous and the highest rating (maroon 300-500).

FWIW, 10/12/17 the AQI in Berkeley was 150. Today it's 197. Seems worse this year, number back that. It could get better by game time but might not. Just have to wait.

I'm not sure it's a good idea to evaluate potential lung exposure and injury by comparing it to last year's "coughing and throat burning." The fine particulates entering your lungs are too small to see or even feel. Any athlete would behoove themself to heed official public health warnings, and NOT go on "feel" or anecdotal evidence.

I feel for those athletes who feel obligated to attend training sessions in this air quality. I hope they can do so with the aid of filters, respirators and/or masks. No reason for a young athlete to do lasting damage when exercise can be avoided, or the damage mitigated.

I've been wearing N95 masks outside whenever the AQI goes much over 100. I very much value my lungs and would like to prevent unnecessary damage if I can. I'd much rather be cycling & engaging in other physical activity in 20 years than be strapped to an oxygen tank suffering from some lung (or other) ailment in retirement.

I'll add that a macho, cavalier attitude in youth is probably greatly regretted by those, for example, who pooh-poohed asbestos exposure warnings who now suffer from mesothelioma.

You are missing the point (or willfully disregarding it). Last year i LOUDLY called for the cancellation of the Wazzu game based in large part on what my classmates said. This year they are saying it's not impacting them.

YOu seem to have some pathological thing about me... it's weird. Why don't you send me a direct message and identify yourself so we can discuss. I doubt you will because people like you don't. As I said, everything is secondary to the players' and students' health. Your proof tho about the quality of the air was that people died in the fire. That's what's transparent.

Oh man, I really don't know what to say. Should we unzip to see who has the bigger Cal schlong? Why put it on me to contact you?

Look, if you look at the AQI numbers, they're just as bad or worse this year. The duration of the Camp Fire is likely to hit 2 weeks of bad AQ. Yet for some reason you want the game this year, over last year when you said it shouln't happen. My guess is you want to do the Bonfire Rally, really bad. Like I said, that's your thing, good for you. But really, why not just say that? You know, the truth will set you free.

There's no measurement thing here. I would just think you'd want me to know who you are since you know who I am.

Do you not understand that should they move the game (which I would support if they do), then they will move the rally. So, you see, that is a non-factor.

But do explain again, how the # of people who died in the fire, is indicative of air quality. Why not explain that bizarre line of argument for us.

Drove down from Quincy through Sacramento yesterday. Horrible air in Sac. I would not expose my kids to this. Or my parents. I don't have any respiratory issues, so I won't worry about it for about 5 hours on Saturday. It's not life changing. Probably like smoking 5 cigarettes.
