Back From Official Visit, Texas DB William Jones Commits to Cal

December 10, 2018

Speedy 5-9/170 Mansfield, Texas cornerback William Jones returned to Texas yesterday after his official visit to Berkeley over the weekend and made the call for Cal, committing to the Bears tonight.

“(DB) Coach (Gerald) Alexander, the whole coaching staff and even the players made it feel like it was the right spot for me to have the best opportunity to be successful in,” said Jones.

Alexander led a continued resurgence in the Cal defensive backfield in 2018 as the Bears finished the regular season fourth in intereceptions with 17 and second in touchdowns scored on INTs with five. The standout DB corps made a strong impression on the 3 star Jones, who will likely play nickel back at Cal.

“The players let me know how big of a change it was with what Coach Alexander was able to do with the DB group,” said Jones. “They told me they hadn’t seen anything like it before. So that really showed me that Coach Alexander is legit and he’s going to give me the tools I need to be successful.”

The former TCU commit felt an immediate comfort level on his trip to Cal and visiting with so many of his future teammates helped give him a glimpse into his future as a Bear.

“I feel like I fit in great at Cal,” said Jones. “Miles Williams and Myles Jernigan -we’re all from the same area so that made me feel like I had family there away from home.

“It was a great environment there. I got a really good vibe. Everyone was really nice and laid back. Everyone treats you like family and everyone speaks and interacts with you there.

“They just added me to the group chat. They’re great guys.”

Expect Jones to sign on early signing day next week. As a senior the future Bear compiled 26 tackes, two interceptions, six fumbles caused and 10 passes defensed for Mansfield.

He looks like a nice get. That said, this sometimes feels like a repeat of Dykes with too much emphasis on one side of the ball. Let's also land some nice skill players for the offense.

Um .... i know this doesn't fit your narrative, but Dykes staff actually recruited very well on defense. They just couldn't coach very well on defense. All of the current stars on Wilcox's defense were in fact Dykes recruits. I am however VERY CONCERNED about the offensive skill position recruiting so far by JW's staff. This is bad.

Alexander has done a great job with the DBs - let's hope we can keep him!

The big concern is height - 5'9" can be problematic. As good as Chidi Iwuoma (5'9") was, he struggled against tall receivers. JJ Stokes (6'4") gave him fits when Cal played UCLA.

He will most likely be replacing traveon beck at nickelback

Beck, standing maybe at 5-10, is arguably the best nickelback in the country

Yep. That's why I don't buy the "Baldwin doesn't have the horses" nonsense. Wilcox was able to coach up the worst defense in the country into one of the best, using the SAME PLAYERS as the former coach.

Meanwhile Baldwin has "coached" one of the best offenses into the country into one of the worst, also with the same players as the former coach.

That's an example of coaching. Or complete lack thereof.

Throw in the strong defensive recruiting over the past two years and the very, very poor offensive recruiting and it's clear one side of the coaching staff is doing its job and the other is one of the worst in college football.

Baldwin is a mediocre FCS coach who is in way, way, way over his head at Cal and a dead weight on the program.

It is said that we are still in the ballgame for Daniels, but, really, would anybody actually bet their personal money on us getting him? I surely wouldn't. But, hey, surprise me!

There you go, Uth. I got concerned that you were being too nice about Baldwin & the other coaches since you hadn't mentioned firing them in every post recently. Good to have you back.

When does Dykes playing them as True Freshmen vs Wilcox playing them as Jrs and Seniors count for anything?

^ Also yes, this is something that needs to be considered. Had Dykes stayed and he grabbed a good DC it's wholly possible we're where Wazzu is now.

Yogi, if Dykes didn't recruit well on defense, how do you explain that we have a Top 25 defense whose starters are overwhelmingly Dykes recruits? Or is your only definition of recruiting well star rankings?

I'm hoping Wilcox can do what the TCU guy has done: have some pretty incredible offenses even though he is a defensive coach. TCU has climbed pretty high up the college food chain. Don't know if they've fizzled or they are reloading.

Your argument here is ridiculous. Dykes was on the verge of fielding a defensive juggernaut. The only thing sadder than Cal stupidly firing Dykes right when he was about to take off is that we wasted 18 years where we could have paired the Hit Squad with an awesome offense. We all knew Holmoe was one OC away and Tedford's success with Holmoe's offensive recruits proved it. (The table is set! Let the big bear eat!) When I think back on missing out on 18 years of Holmoe led dominance I just cry. Boy Tedford and Wilcox sure lucked into falling ass backward into the sweet, sweet situations Holmoe and Dykes left for them.

Maybe just maybe our scheme/misdirection/coaching has more to do with our defense being really really good than individual talent.

And maybe, just maybe, our offensive deficiencies have more to do with bad scheme, lack of misdirection, and poor coaching than it does with individual talent as well...

Sure, more talent would help on both sides of the ball, but it sure looked to me like our defense played as a unit and above their individual talent levels, and our offense played well below their talent levels.

Sounds fair to me, though I don't doubt the coaches unlocked some talent that was there. After all, it's not like everyone on defense performed like Weaver and Kunaszyk.

Also recall that Weaver was not recruited as a linebacker, but as a defensive lineman, where he didn't really perform that well.

The moon landing where? It is just a big ball of light that rises from underneath one edge of the earth every night, floats across the sky, and disappears over the other edge of the earth. It never lands.

I am surprised that Beck is only 5-10. He must have a great vertical leap since he regularly was fighting for balls against receivers who were clearly over 6 feet.

I would not call the 2016 Cal team one of the best offenses in the country... And it was entirely built off the production of NFL drafted QB, WR, RB who weren't returning.
