A quick google search brought up entries both on BI and the cardboard site that discuss this. Shaw basically said it wasn't a good use of his or his players' time. No doubt this is the same calculus that many Stanford students and alumni use every Saturday during the season, which explains their lousy attendance figures even when their teams have good records.

I get the feeling that the best thing for us would have been for Tedford to move on after the '04 or '06 seasons and us hiring someone young with a solid reputation (sorta like a Wilcox now). I think under those circumstances we're considered a perennial contender for the North and a couple of Pac-12 titles.
