On Twitter this morning Ted Robinson said he's leaving the 49ers broadcast booth. Robinson of course replaced Starkey 10 years ago. At that time, who would have thought Starkey would still be in the Cal booth when Robinson left the 49ers?

I'm thinking Starkey has a Christopher Steele caliber dossier on the people in the position to pull the trigger on him. Perhaps after Blond Moe gets Musburger fired Joe can call Raiders' games. Not a lot of action on the Raiders side of the ball so the pace is leisurely.

Like it or not, Starkey is such a big part of Cal history he can choose when his time has come.

I'm thinking it is more like such person has the attitude of "I have ten fingers. I'd have to lift one of them to pull this here trigger. Sigh...maybe next year someone will get me one of those Alexa thingies and I can just say "Alexa, fire Joe Starkey." He stays for now."

Joe is in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the broadcaster that has extended his career the longest off the vapors of one iconic play call.

Just spoke to Joe Starkeys dad. His plan is to retire after the 55th anniversary of The Play.

The people behind Amazon's Alexa are working with UC Berkeley engineers to create an AI of Joe's voice so that he continue to call games after his death.

Yes they have to get the algorithm right so that it randomly subtracts from down and distance and adds on yardage to plays so you get results like

Actual down and distance: 3rd and 8.

Stated down and distance: 2 and 5.

Actual gain on next play: 4 yards

Stated gain: 6 yards

Now self correct: 4th and 4 and Cal punts.

I think the adding in the phrase "Utah pass" 4 times each game is the hardest.

Starkey is the Cheez-It Bowl of announcers. There is no way to actually follow what is happening during the game on a play by play basis while listening to Joe.

And yet, every once in a while he uncorks something really funny or cleaver. You HAVE to listen out of morbid curiosity. That's our Joe!
