For those of you who don't know: Peyton Manning has this show on ESPN's subscription service where he breaks down QB play.

Watch the thing in its entirety (3 videos) on the link below (before it's taken down). It's fantastic. And you'll really appreciate Goff after watching it.

(If you're unable to play it, disable your ad blockers).

Also, watch out for Goff teasing Cam Jordan, "Who do you think you are, a DB?"

Too bad his hands aren't as big as Carson Wentz.
He's probably going to be a bust.
It's logic like this that keeps the Cleveland Browns at the bottom of all professional sports teams and why they have trouble drafting QBs.

Thanks Okaydo. This was excellent. Peyton is so wise, articulate, and supportive here and helps you appreciate the details of Goff's game, including pointing things out that are genuinely difficult but might be underappreciated by casual viewers. I now forgive Peyton for those annoying Nationwide commercials.

Ps. I needed to use my third browser option (Opera) to view the videos.

I love Opera. Although I use Firefox, Safari and Chrome frequently, too.

After watching that, I checked my Twitter feed and there was ESPN's Bill Barnwell just sh*tting on Goff.

Barnwell is one of several Goff haters. (An Irish guy named Cian Fahey is Goff's hater #1. Google him.)

Anyways, it's Barnwell and Fahey who really have me fired up about Goff winning. (On Sept. 27, Barnwell wrote this article about how the Rams could trade Goff and draft another QB, suggesting that Sean McVay can work his magic on any QB. Hours later, Goff had a perfect passer rating, throwing 5 TDs vs. the Vikings, and prompting Bill Belichick to text Sean McVay about their explosive offense.)

So this Barnwell guy is just randomly posting clips of poor Goff throws to criticize? What a weird dude.

Did your post time travel from last January? You must have missed the 2018 season.

Great post. Thank you.

I saw 2 face masks and 1 helmet-helmet hit against the RAMS that weren't called.

One of the best QB breakdowns I have seen...of any QB

They sure do a nice job making his offense unpredictable and moving the pocket to keep his launch point clean. Credit to Goff he has skills of course but what a difference a better coach and a second year in the qb job can make huh?

Just in case someone has been living under a rock for the past year, this has to the single greatest boost to Goff's likable factor for non-Cal fans (aside from his play on the field). Don't think he'd be able to hide behind a mole and a wig at this point.

Right? Night and day. Same QB, different coach, dramatically different result. And yes, the prior coaches were all highly paid professionals that know more than we do and were all very successful at lower levels, etc, etc

Actually...as I've pointed out before, Goff's rookie coaches were highly inexperienced.

I did this "research" a while ago to explain Goff's sudden improvement.

Baker Mayfield's rookie year coaches had a combined 34 years working as an NFL offensive coordinator and/or QB coach in 2018.

Head coach Hue Jackson = 7 years = 2 years as an NFL QB coach, 5 years as an NFL OC
Offensive coordinator Todd Haley = 8 years = 0 years as an NFL QB coach, 8 years as an NFL OC
Quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese = 15 years = 13 years as an NFL QB coach, 2 years as an NFL OC
Interim Head Coach Gregg Williams = 0 years = 0 years as an NFL QB coach, 0 years as an NFL OC
Interim Offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens = 4 years = 4 years an an NFL QB coach, 0 years as an NFL OC

Dak Prescott's rookie year coaches had a combined 33 years working as an NFL offensive coordinator and/or QB coach.

Head coach Jason Garrett = 6 years = 2 years as an NFL QB coach, 4 years as NFL OC
Offensive coordinator Scott Linehan = 11 years = 0 years an an NFL QB coach, 11 years as an NFL OC
Quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson = 16 years = 16 years as an NFL QB coach, 0 years as an NFL OC

Carson Wentz's rookie year coaches had a combined 17 years working as an offensive coordinator and/or QB coach.

Head coach Doug Pederson = 6 years = 3 years as an NFL QB coach, 3 years as an NFL OC
Offensive coordinator Frank Reich = 5 years = 3 years as an NFL QB coach, 2 years as an NFL OC
Quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo = 6 years = 5 years as an NFL QB coach, 1 year as an NFL OC

(*Of note: 2 of those coaches were backups to hall of fame QBs, Pederson for Brett Favre and Reich for Jim Kelly. And of course Reich went on to turn around Andrew Luck's career).

Pat Mahomes' rookie year coaches had a combined 6 years working as an NFL offensive coordinator and/or QB coach.

Head coach Andy Reid = 2 years = 2 years as an NFL QB coach, 0 years as an NFL OC
Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy = 4 years = 3 years as an NFL QB coach, 1 year as an NFL OC

(*I'm not counting head coaching experience, just direct experience as an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. But obviously, Mahomes was backed by more than 6 years OC/QB experience since Reid has been calling plays and developing QBs for two decades.)

Jared Goff's rookie year coaches had a combined 1 year working as an NFL offensive coordinator and/or QB coach.

Head coach Jeff Fisher = 0 years = 0 years as an NFL QB coach, 0 years as an NFL OC
Offensive coordinator Rob Boras = 0 years = 0 years as an NFL QB coach, 0 years as an NFL OC
Quarterbacks coach Chris Weinke = 1 year = 1 year as an NFL QB coach, 0 years as an NFL OC

(*Rob Boras is currently the tight ends coach for the Buffalo Bills. Chris Weinke is currently the running backs coach for the Tennesse Volunteers. I don't remember watching this, but an NFL podcast I listened to recounted how Weinke humiliated Goff and dressed him down on Hard Knocks. And the reporters hosting the podcast say that they heard from other people around the league that his behavior was a fireable offense.)

Jared Goff's second-year coaches had a combined 23 years working as an NFL offensive coordinator and/or QB coach.

Head coach Sean McVay = 3 years = 0 years as an NFL QB coach, 3 years as an NFL OC
Offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur = 6 years = 6 years as an NFL QB coach, 0 years as an NFL OC
Quarterbacks coach Greg Olson = 14 years = 14 years as an NFL QB coach and/or NFL OC

And that's why Goff improved.

I could go on and on with other quarterbacks. People like to compare Goff to Mitch Trubisky, but Trubisky had OC/QB-experienced coaches his rookie year. And even if Baker Mayfield had a dysfunctional coaching staff, at least they were very experienced. But Mayfield's improvement is mostly attributed to him.

While a lot of people have come around to the "Jeff Fisher Effect," too many think that Goff had very little to do with his own success. When, in fact, a lot of it was Goff.

Of course, McVay deserves a lot of credit...but Goff needed decently experienced coaches.

That is a great video. Jared makes a statement when recounting the Arizona State game about what happened after a Cal score that perfectly summarizes the Sonny Dykes Era:

That was a frickin' cold night. I just skimmed over the game again. Wow, what a game. The first half was terrible and Cal fell behind by a lot. But I remember now that the offense was buzzing in the 2nd half, and I remember calmly thinking that Cal was going to get it done. Despite trailing almost the whole game, I remember feeling confident, not the usual dread that the Cal fan feels when Cal is in a hole.

Nah. Goff is a Warriors fan since he was a child. He obviously ripped that off from...

So apparently the Patriots backup QB Brian Hoyer (I remember his name from Michigan State), after watching Peyton's breakdown of Goff's game, he realized that McVay was running the same offense that Hoyer played under Kyle Shanahan in Cleveland.

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2019/02/11/brian-hoyers-experience-with-kyle-shanahan-paid-off-for-patriots-in-super-bowl/

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/heres-how-peyton-manning-accidentally-helped-tom-brady-patriots-win-another-super-bowl-ring/

As the scout team QB, Hoyer was able to prepare the Patriots defense well because he knew the McVay offense so well.
