Does anyone know what hotel Cal usually has pregame events at or where they will be staying this year?

Is there a hotel that a lot of Cal fans stay at?

Park City. If you have kids and plan to be there a few days, the Marriott Mountainside is a lot of fun for families.

Park City sounds like a great option. ~28 miles away.

Curious about downtown options as it appears that there is a light rail stop at Rice-Eccles, so one could do the whole trip without getting a car.

A few years ago, we went to the Cal organized Tailgate at a watering hole downtown and then took the transit system up to the stadium with a bunch of Utes. Really easy and convenient both ways.

We spend a lot of time in Utah, where we have a house in Park City.

If you are old school, the Grand America Hotel and The Little American Hotel have what you would expect in service, fancy decor, etc. Sorta like the downtown LA Biltmore. For more trendy, the Kimpton is swanky and a great location near Temple Square. All are near rail stops to the Rice-Ecccles stadium. That said, I'm not sure what the weekend schedule if for rail, so I would check before booking. You can get good value staying in SLC. Once beyond these you are down to boring mid-level chains like Hilton, Marriott and Doubletree. Blah. Downtown SLC is known for its brew pubs, and is small and safe, so you can walk around.

If your are willing to take a car, it is shoulder season in often expensive Park City, and probably good deals at the luxury hotels: Montage (rated one of the top hotels in the US), Waldorf Astoria, St. Regis (the one we would refer people to if you don't mind paying a few extra bucks), and the Stein Erickson Lodge. The Montage and Steins, while both being very famous with the jet set, are up in Deer valley so add an additional 20 minutes in driving. For mid range, the Hotel Park City has nice amenities and is well located. Park City, of course, has a ton of outdoor activities and top restaurants. Lot of Olympians and uber-athletes wondering around.

A very silly, but excellent suggestion nonetheless! Too bad Moab doesn't sport a college team Cal could play - I'd go every time!

It's difficult to plan when without a set game time in place.

However, assuming you have 3+ days (two nights in Moab).
A safe 3.5+ hour drive; short 2.5+ hour flight, Moab to SLC.

Fly to Denver and via Skywest to Moab; or
fly to Denver to Grand Junction, CO make a 2 hour drive across the western slope of the Rockies to Moab.

Spend time in the desert: https://flyredtail.com/

Drive to SLC,take in the game and fly back to SFO.
