Horrible.
First time in 4 years I tuned into a game religiously. 4-0. Home game on Friday night. Favored. And it ends with the staring QB getting hurt and a backup who can't complete a two yard pass. And a loss.
Cal athletics. We can't have nice things.

There weren't this many missed tackles by last years' D.
Losing Grabers is big. Its not fair to blame the team for not showing up. I hope he heals up quick. Anyone know how serious it is?
Well, we did lose our blossoming QB just before crunch-time started.
This was Justin Wilcox's moment.... and he blew it. horrible loss. worried about fans coming out. fans come out. and the team plays like that.
Cal wins if they're up and coming QB doesn't get hurt. He's replaced with a guy who couldn't throw forcing us to only run.
If I know Cal football, it's that you are riding high to start the season and then your QB gets hurt and it all falls apart.

Very disappointed, as this was a winnable game, but I'm not gonna blame Modster. His sample size, and the situation tonight, make it impossible to judge him at this point. He was put in a very difficult situation. As it appears Garbers will be out for awhile, hopefully he'll get the reps to gain some confidence and at least a basic comfort level in the offense. BB is gonna have to rework the offensive strategy to make the most he can of Modster's abilities. He has his work cut out for him with the Bears traveling to Eugene next week. A very tough game, in a very difficult environment. This reminds me of 1992, when Cal was 4-0 and kicking UW's ass in Berkeley. Dave Barr went down, Cal coughed up a big lead, and lost that game and the next 4 games without him. Barr came back and the Bears won their last 4 with him. Hopefully Garbers comes back, and the Bears manage NOT to have a losing streak in the interim. But looking at him coming back out of the locker room was not encouraging.

I see why Cal recruited Daniels so hard. Repeatedly burned our D with his arm when forced to scramble, and with his legs on 3rd and long. He plays with impressive poise for a true freshman surrounded by other freshmen. Our D was simply too sloppy on critical downs.

horrible playcalling by Baldwin. Zero Playaction bootleg on early downs to help his backup QB.. continually put in long 3rd down situations. did Baldwin think he could run every play the rest of the game. GENIUS. the 1st drive of teh 2nd half was godsend. and Baldwin blew it.
A good coach wins this game regardless. defense **** the bed. against a true freshman QB. our defense should have feasted. but too worried about how good they were called b4 season.

What was the reasons why Daniels didn't choose Cal? He was impressive for a true frosh.
The defense hasn't been up to snuff for a while, giving up a big lead late to N. Texas, giving up big chunk plays in Mississippi and tackling like the Oakland Raiders tonight.
I'm not saying it's on them. They are still impressive, but Cal just doesn't have the depth to keep at a high level through all these injuries.

defense just folded like a cheap house of cards.
Once Garbers went out, ASU closed things down. His passing opened the run game. Without the pass, ASU stacked the box and dared Cal to throw.
Worst defensive performance of the year. Our pass defense was poor, and our pass rush was on a holiday. Plus we just could not stop Benjamin or contain Daniels. Very disappointing.

After that we opened up the playbook for Modster and he either threw garbage or had his throws dropped, or threw short nothing's.

Modster didn't get it done passing wise. Can't really get too down on him. Disappointing, sure but not everyone is Nick Foles or Earl Morrell.

Play action would have been a great counter to the runs. I rhought we had a semblance of an offense there.
Even when Garbers was in the game. I still don't get BB's consistent use of empty backfield sets on first down given our personnel. If teams are selling out against the run, don't abandon itfake it and throw to the TEs off playaction. Worked against us.

You're being very generous calling ST "shaky." An unmitigated disaster is closer. Not quite that bad, but does our punter selection process require students with absolutely NO punting experience? Sure looks like it.
Isn't this just a reflection of the age-old Cal situation: Every now and again we assemble a quality group of starters. We play well, are competitive and show promise. Hopes rise. Then four or so games into the season, we're down several players due to injury and we lack the depth of other programs to fill the gaps and things fall apart. By season's end, we're totally depleted... and then play U$C. Futility continues. This seems to explain the phenomenon year in and year out.sycasey said:
