Calhoun Stays Home to Rep the Bay in Cal's Talented 2021 Class
The Bears continue to add talented players to the 2021 class, adding 4 star 6-4/245 LIberty (Brentwood, CA) High School DE Akili Calhoun today on his unofficial visit.
The talented junior has offers from half the Pac-12, with UCLA, ASU, Arizona, Washington State, Oregon State along with the Bears.
“It just feels right,” said Calhoun this afternoon. “Everything about Cal is attractive for me and I also like having that option of playing in front of my family.”
On an earlier visit, Calhoun said, “The coaches made me feel like family, especially the strength and conditioning coach, Torre Becton. I can't wait to go back for a spring ball practice.”
“I’m happy for him,” said fellow Cal commit and friend Jermaine Terry. “Now it’s time to get to work.”
Liberty head coach Ryan Partridge praised Calhoun for his work ethic, which he constantly displays both on and off the field.
“He’s one of the hardest workers I’ve ever coached,” said Partridge. “His mindset is always right whether it’s in the weight room or on the practice field.
“[He also] works hard in the classroom. Since freshman year he’s had constant improvement in the classroom and he understands that more opportunities are there when his grades are better.”
His mom echoed Patridge’s comments about Calhoun’s work ethic in the classroom.
“He’s doing great,” she said. “He’s maintaining a 3.2 and he’s increasing that right now. At one point he was on the honor roll, but right now he comes home right after practice or after school and is just trudging along with his work. He stays up late, he does whatever it takes to make sure his grades are in, and he’s very proud of his grades. He communicates with teachers and will go in after school if needed.”
Calhoun has racked up 41 tackles in 15 games with Liberty, including 17.5 tackles for loss, seven sacks, two QB hurries, one forced fumble and one pass defended.
Calhoun became the fourth commit of the 2021 class -by far the Bears’ fastest recruiting start in history- jointing good friend and local Kennedy Richmond star TE Jermaine Terry, Mission Viejo WR Mavin Anderson and Minnesota OT Bastian Swinney .
