Nothing really to do with football, but since this is the slow season, I figured what the H.

Jonathan Makonnen's (Cal WR from 2002-2004) mother ran a Fish & Chips restaurant in Menlo Park, that I used to stop at when traveling to games at the Farm. Well, that store has now closed (effective a year ago, I think), but is still operating as a food truck, around Menlo Park and East Palo Alto. Probably have to go to Facebook to figure out exactly where the truck is on any given day.

Used to go there fairly often. Mom was always super nice and always gave me extra fries and stuff cause I always wore cal gear. One time we had a really interesting conversation about "what if" her son hadn't slipped against SC

Sad to hear it's no longer there. Also, sad to hear that Clarke's in Mt. View (75 years in the same spot) was unable to weather the virus.

I'm a big fan of fish and chips

best I've had by far was in Victoria, Canada.
and that includes a trip to London where one of my primary missions was to find the best fish and chips

does anyone have any fish and chips recommendations in the bay?

I went to the food truck like six months ago. Food is still excellent. They serve the best Southern-style cornmeal-battered fish and chips that I have ever had. I would recommend it even if it there was no Cal connection. I just made the connection that Jonathan's fish and chips is probably named after the football player.

The truck was near Bay Road and Pulgas in East Palo Alto, and I think they rarely move. When I went most had called in ahead of time with their orders. Check out Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/jonathansfishnchips/). But then go.

Clark's didn't close because of the virus, the property was sold. They could have survived on to-go orders for a while

The Swinging Door in Belmont. I've not been there but a friend posts pictures of it on FB every Monday and it looks awesome. It's closed right now I think for the virus, I think.

It's been nearly 40 years since I lived in the East Bay. Back then there were several H. Salt Esquire fish and chips places, including Rockridge and Alameda. E. Bay residents, how could you allow these to close over the years? Several years ago I finally tracked one down in Richmond. Is that the last one? Shame, shame on all of you. At least you preserved Nation's.

There was even one just west of the Cal campus that I used to go to often.
Boy, I miss those!

Actually, it's in San Mateo, on East 25th. I went in there once for lunch and asked about their specialty. Everyone piped up about the fish 'n chips so I ordered them. I'd give them about a 7.5 out of 10.

Crap. You mean Jonathan's? I drove by that place like 10,000 times. Never stopped. Definitely would have if I'd known that was Makonnen's mom's place. Have to go look for that food truck.

Yep - Jonathan's - the one on Willow Road, that you pass after coming off the Dumbarton Bridge.

H Salt Esq Fish 'n Chips was on west side of Telegraph between Parker and Dwight

H Salt Esq Fish 'n Chips was probably my intro to fish n chips, so I have fond memories of it, but they are rare now, and one I did find was not the same quality

By the way, someone mentioned Nation's. I miss the one on Durant, and now go to Super Duper on the corner of telegraph and durant. Pretty good, and they try to be healthy, but still miss Nations.

Still one in El Cerrito on San Pablo and University Ave in Berkeley

Nation's in Pleasanton and Tracy. Oh yeah, Stockton too. Any other locations not mentioned?

After the late night games as we're heading home more often than not we stop at the Nation's in Tracy (open 24 hours). And, again more often than not, we'll see other Cal fans heading home. Even at 1:30 in the morning there are always a significant amount of customers there, which always causes us to wonder - why? I mean we're there because we're returning from a late game, but who else is out at that time? Anyway, regardless of what we had to eat at or before the game the intent to "just have a slice of pie" is instantly changed when we smell the burgers and it's "yeah, I'll have a burger." If I'm good, no fries. Got to watch the weight.

There's a Nation's in Livermore too. Went there a couple of weeks ago.

What about the Nations on University, between MLK and Sacramento? I went there last spring with my son and introduced him to my favorite Berkeley burger place (I mentioned the one on Durant too). Is it gone?

Yeah, I knew the one on Durant was gone. Am glad the one on University is still there and glad it still mainly tastes the same. My son loves in n out and when I told him I had to do without in n out for a few years (they had none beyond so cal when I was there) he was worried about what he'd have if he goes to school there. After introducing him to Nation's, he said he'd be good for his burger fix. Lol

I now know I'm an old fart.....
I went there when it was just Giant Burger....no Nation's.

Hundal Sahib (HS) Fish & Chips in El Sobrante is incredibly good. Out-of-the-way shopping center, but I was very impressed by the quality. Follows the H. Salt model but tastes more fresh.
