We've covered great movie lines, concerts attended, worst movies and now it's time for Binge Watching.
I am transfixed by Bosch based on cop books by Michael Connelly. You'll find it on Amazon. Really performed well by all the actors, well written and realistic. Real places in LA are mentioned. I have to disagree with Bosch when he says the best Mexican food in L.A. is Poquito Mas. There's about one hundred better restaurants for Mexican than that chain. But don't let that stop you from watching Bosch. It's exciting and gets down and dirty when the police have to chase a bad guy.

One of the prime actors is Lance Reddick. He's a tall well-built African-American who plays the Chief of Police. But if you're a fan of John Wick, you'll know him as the guy at the reception desk who directs people to Ian McShane, the head of the Continental Hotel.

I also binged on the Night Manager. Foreign intrigue, murders, beautiful women. What else do you want?

Anyhow, that's two I would recommend to anyone. I'm interested,in this time of Covid 19, what you binged on.

I.m in the middle of season 3 on Bosch. Agree it's very good. Just about to go back and resume watching. I wonder if his brother the Lincoln Lawyer makes an appearance in the series. I'm a fan of Connely's books also, I'll probably read the one's I missed.

I am watching Season 6 of Bosch now. The entire series is A+.

Lance Reddick is awesome and was great in The Wire. He has the same vibe as the late Woody Strode, who played football at UCLA. He was in Spartacus, the Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Sergeant Rutledge, The Professionals and many more.

I've only watched a few episodes. But Bosch is filmed is/has been filmed where I grew up. The first few episodes at least.

Oh, and Bosch works (worked?) and films on location at the Hollywood Division of the LAPD, where I spent some of my childhood (not for bad reasons!).

Lance Reddick is most famous for The Wire. If you haven't seen that show, HBO is streaming it for free on the HBO Go app during the pandemic.

So many other TV writers watched and loved The Wire that they cast Wire alums on their shows, especially Reddick.

I was just going to post about Greg Cummins. I had no idea till I read earlier this week that he played at my school (Miramonte) in the 70's then at Cal and has been in some pretty big shows and movies over the years. Pretty cool. One of my Miramonte teammates was Frank Sobotka in The Wire, too.

Since SIP, I've caught up on WestWorld and all 3 seasons of Ozark. I'm halfway through All-American, which is kinda like The Real OC meets Friday Night Lights. Also caught Love is Blind because I'm oddly fascinated by social experiments like that. Also have never missed a Survivor episode. Wednesday's episode may have been their best in all 20 years and 40 seasons, where 20 of the past winners returned to compete against each other for 2 million.

Since this a sports site I will mention "All American" on Netflix. Picture Friday Night Lights meets Beverly Hills 90210 meets Straight out of Compton. I just stumbled on it but think the acting's quite good and I've binged through the two seasons. Actually, more teen drama than football story but it primarily concerns a 5 star running back from Compton who transfers to Beverly Hills HS to live with Coach/family friend. I really got into it. Anyone else?

Anybody who has never seen "The Wire", there you go: One of the best ever. Ever.

Because I have little kids who hate going to bed, I am "gradually binge watching" (probably not even a thing) some of the shows I previously missed: Did Sopranos last year and am now almost finished Game of Thrones. I guess Breaking Bad is next. I'm always behind...

I agree about the Wire.

Breaking Bad is very good and Better Call Saul might be the rare case where a spin-off is just as good or better than the original.

The Fargo TV series is another case of a spin-off living up to the original. All three seasons are really good.

Yes, I mentioned it earlier. I'm halfway through season two of two of All American. I forgot Straight out of Compton in my description but that's true, too.

IIRC, the full series' I've watched include The Wire, Game of Thrones, The Sopranoes, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul. Lost and Mad Men.

The HBO series Boardwalk Empire was really, really good.

HBO's "True Detective" had three seasons (about 6-8 episodes each). Each season is separate from the others, different area, different detectives, different crime. The first season was great, the second one was good, the third started out really good, but I thought the final ending disappointed.

Yeah, if you never saw Mad Men, it is fantastic. Great to watch with a significant other who might not be into "guy" series (crime, cops, sports, violence, etc... not that women can't like that stuff, too!).

How long do you want to ignore this user?
If your significant other has a tolerance level for some violence, this show is a rush (if you are single or watch your own stuff, you're good to go). After each episode I would look at my wife and say, "We are twisted f's watching this." The writing is good. Never a dull moment. Buy the ticket and take the ride. And if you like martial arts, almost every character knows a different discipline (Judo, Jeet Kune Do, American boxing, Muay Thai, Wing Chung Kung Fu, Sambo, Krav Maga). Making this post has convinced me to watch it again.

Cinemax's Banshee has the best fight scenes on TV. Here are 5 reasons why. - Vox

" Its setting the rural hamlet of Banshee, Pennsylvania is likewise a melting pot of idiosyncratic elements that somehow come together beautifully. Ex-Amish crime bosses, a pitiless gang based on a Native American reservation, a whole military base's worth of corrupt soldiers, a cross-dressing hacker, and 7-foot-tall giants are somehow all crammed into the tiny town. Oh, and everyone is a martial arts expert. Everyone."

You are selecting great stuff to watch. Breaking Bad is awesome.

Given our tastes are comparable, consider Counterpart, The Loudest Voice, Arrested Development (not everyone likes), House of Cards (last season didn't work that well), and True Detective (but avoid season 2)

I also liked Dexter, Crossing Lines and Deadwood, but they are not for everyone or IMO, up there as high as your recent watching material.

Edit: add Ozark to the list, though like The Wire, you have to patient at the beginning.

Just finished season 3 of Ozarks which easily makes my top list of current or ongoing series along with Better Call Sal and Barry. All have incredible writing, acting, and production values.

I really like shows that are a bit unique or were somewhat groundbreaking for their time. Some from the past:
  • Lost
  • Breaking Bad
  • Mad Men
  • Sopranos
  • Rome
  • Deadwood
  • Fargo (particularly season 1)
  • ok, GOT
  • Curb Your Enthusiasm

Maybe it's about time to give Bosch another try. I got through about a season and a half, and although it was pretty good I found it a bit too procedural.

Nice list. I really enjoyed Goliath although it didn't quite make my top-tier list. Just about anything with BBT is great (have you seen season I of Fargo?), and the fun they have with all the callbacks is kind of BCSaul-esc.

I haven't seen or heard of Mindhunter, but I'm tempted to check it out based on the rest of your list.

I have never even heard of most of these shows and am only familiar with some of them (e.g., Deadwood, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Sopranos) - probably because I don't have HBO. I am not really into television dramas either. If I am watching TV it is mostly for my own education (documentaries), comedic relief, or else something like PBS. My SO loves cooking shows so we watch A LOT of those - well she does but they are on in the background.

Arrested Development is a great recommendation suiting my tastes, but I also want to mention that 30 Rock comes out on Blu Ray for the first time on April 21st! I have some of the seasons on DVD thanks to thrift store finds, but it will great to see the entire series!

The only shows I'm watching now are the last two. I have 2 more episodes left of Curb.

All the shows on this thread are "manly" shows.

I thought I'd add a womanly show that I heard is good. I'll start watching tonight. It just came out this week.

It revolves around perhaps the most influential woman in American history. It's created by a former Mad Men writer (and featuring several Mad Men alums). It's on Hulu.
