Fun Fact: Timothy Olyphant's younger brother played water polo at Cal in the 90s
thanks Socalie; brother matt => http://matthewolyphant.com

big bro..

Quote:

Timothy quickly became Modesto's favorite son, competing as a pro swimmer and excelling at drawing. It was, by chance, that he enrolled in an acting course as an elective and decided to pursue an acting career. He took his family and headed to New York City, where he studied the craft and began auditioning for roles. From the beginning, he tried to choose diversified roles and take chances with every genre and always approached everything he did with commitment, humor and grace. Timothy is married to his college sweetheart, Alexis Knief, and, together, they raise three children, one son and two daughters in California. He has managed to keep his personal life out of the tabloids. He obviously has his priorities straight, as this is no easy task in Hollywood.

I liked it. Pete and Bill are funny as usual, but I considered it primarily a serious film, much like an episode of Louie. It is a touching film in that it is autobiographical for Pete. Marisa T. as his mom is excellent. Next up, Spike Lee:

I watched da 5 this morning, but reading all the insights on Twitter makes me think I'd better appreciate it on 2nd viewing. I liked it, by the way. But I've been thinking a lot about it all day.

It is a good movie. Spike said Netflix didn't give him a big enough budget to use de aging CGI (except one still shot in closing credits). I assume that also explains why the combat and modern day action scenes appeared video game like. I have always loved the work of Delroy Lindo, Clarke Peters, and Isiah Whitlock, Jr. (the latter two actors of The Wire fame).

" In flashbacks, all four of the actors, all over 50, play themselves without de-aging makeup or digital effects, like we've seen in Netflix's The Irishman. According to film notes obtained by the New York Times, this decision was meant to illustrate how "current dilemmas and even ailments color recollections of their former selves." But Lee had a much simpler explanation. "I was not getting $100 million to de-age our guys," he told the Times, alluding to the reported $160 million budget for The Irishman, in which CGI was used to de-age Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Al Pacino. Netflix said there's de-aging at home and it's called your imagination. But, all in all, Lee isn't that pressed about it. "I think we were able to turn a negative into a positive," he said."

*As I said, it makes sense to me because the combat scenes seemed really cheesy and cheap and I assume combat realism in film is at least as expensive as de aging. Plus, to my knowledge, it may be the first film in film history where in flashbacks going back 50 years the principals still look like the 70+ year old men they are portrayed as in present time.

If the news is getting you down, how about something from Monty Python. I watched Life of Brian and laughed my arse off. It's still good after 45 years. The best scene IMO is when the group stops to buy stones for the stoning they're attending.
I mentioned that just before there was Monty Python, there was"At Last the 1948 Show"

with John Cleese and others practicing for Monty Python on hapless victims like Marty Feldman

and with the lovely Aimi McDonald.

Netflix 'Haven' lasted long enough (78 episodes) for you to like the characters enough so that you didn't want to see their ultimate end, much like 'Ripper Street'; binge watching slows down in advance of an uncomfortable end.

A very popular British drama, Monarch of the Glen, was wonderful in explaining lesser known aspects of Scottish life in following the proceedings of the laird; who by ownership of land has control over his tenants much the way English nobles once had over serfs. Partially explaining how the son of a Scottish mother thinks as a real estate developer he can govern a country.

This is an interesting article on how the script came together. One of the original writers is Rachel Bilson's father (if you know who Rachel Bilson is.)

thanks Yoshi Bear. found the first season streams on Netflix, either a one and done, or not, avoiding spoilers about S2 if you please.

16 one hour episodes follow a heartfelt romance, very well received by international film critics.

would like to give it a look-see, except put off by the generational Italian series "my brilliant friend". both task english viewers to keep glancing away from performers to catch up with captioning.
