I dont think Cal was charged with recruiting violations under Mike White. I think the fear of that caused him to be fired.
We were all'pissed when he was fired with a 7-4 record.

Hmmmm... perhaps the first time Cal has fired a Cal coach TOO SOON?

It always seemed to me that Mike White was a good guy and a really good football coach. But when I started Cal in 1977 he had recruited a friend of mine that had no business getting into Cal. Purely anecdotal but White sure seemed to have a lot of questionable issues surrounding him.

There was a coach assigned to be sure Chuck Muncie went to class.

One of my favorite Cal games ever. CMS was really rocking that day. McKay had just announced he was leaving U$C at the end of the season to coach the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. A huge banner was paraded in front of the west side of CMS, "McKay runs to Florida when Cal kicks his ass."

As others have said, Vince Evans was a terrible passer in college. But he was a strong runner and of course had Ricky Bell to hand off to. U$C also had an amazing defense that year. Until we played them they were giving up only 7 points a game. We scored more against them than any other team in 1975.

When leaving the game, basking in that incredible win, I passed a USC coed. She was clapping along to the Condom's one song band while bawling her eyes out. She blubbered, "You should still support your team when they lose." I just smiled.
