Note that each team has the same bye week as each of its week 1 and week 2 opponents, in case postponements are needed.

Not a single rivalry game being played for the last game. I know everyone had to scramble and figure this whole thing out quickly but I would have placed every last game as the rivalry game and worked back from there

Anyway, I am excited to see some good college football this season. Everyone stay safe

We finally get SC early. I predict we won't lose a game- don't worry about how/why.

they're probably trying to get them out of the way as early as possible in case the season has to be cancelled

I wonder if they intentionally front loaded the rivalries. Less chance of canceling them. Better chance of rescheduling?

Mainly regionalism. Play teams close to you first, mainly your own division, although cant be done in every case. ..

Looks like no fans or maybe a limited number. Maybe Tightwad Hill?

Let's stay hopeful that football happens and that fans can see games in the latter half.
The truth lies somewhere between CNN and Fox.

This senario reminds me of the song "We've Only Just Begun" by The Carpenters. Although some parents may disagree, all kids are homo sapiens. The virus, albeit some believe it isn't alive, is still learning how to use homo sapiens. It's like a hungry lone wolf watching a herd of deer say. It will first pick off all the older members (weak immune systems) .....the sickly (dysfunctional immune systems) ......then the young (developing immune systems)....before really exposing itself to the main herd (tada...a mutant maybe?). The bottomline is kids will get infected and really transmit the virus if they foolishly huddle together, as in school. It's just a matter of time especially when nothing is being collectively done.

I Hate to say it but sometimes you are spot on.
And this is one of those times.
Dr. Fauci reported in Congress today that we can defeat this virus but we must fight it together as a nation Instead of attacking it with a diversity project f actions.
Imagine we all lived in 50 houses in a remote small town. A wildfire approaches that the town and each of the 50 families decides not to band together to fight the wildfire together but to fight the fire each in their own way.

I would assume that they would want to put rivalries at the end in the hope that fans may actually be able to go to them. There is zero chance of anyone being able to go to the USC-UCLA game, slim chance anyone goes to Big Game, but a decent enough chance that they can get 10-15k in the door at the end of the season (probably depending on the availability of a vaccine).

Just as an aside for your consideration...with regard to a vaccine for covid-19...its not just a matter of mass producing a timely vaccine that creates viral antibodies....but even assuming there are no harmful side effects (although I don't see how this can be established in the short period of time that we're concerned with)...there's the real question of how long will the created antibody protection (immunity) last....weeks?...months?....lifetime? Qui sait??

Worse, there are some people who say the wildfire is a hoax, some are opposed to taking any measure to fight it, even some who are recommending gasoline for fighting it,

Uh, I'm not sure how this relates to the Articles. You realize that the Articles created 13 independent "states" with very little binding them.

And, can we dispense with the ascription of human intent to non-human (often inanimate) things? The virus has not "gotten its foot in the door." It is not like a hungry wolf, stalking its prey. It is a relatively simple organism whose components so happen to interact with humans in a few ways that our bodies cannot easily defend against. There are thousands, probably millions, of viruses in the environment, all but a few of which our body's defenses easily kill.

NEVER MIND - I just saw another post that indicated the OSU and USC contests are away games for us.

Fauci has forfeited all credibility with his continual self-contradictions. He was trained to know the mechanism of the human body. He has become a manager of statistics, about which he was not trained, nor does he appear to know.

The Chinese did not come up with the virus - that implies a person or persons residing in China developed the virus. In fact, the virus is a natural phenomena that was initiated in China by careless behavior.

Otherwise, your last paragraph is on the mark.....

Estimates I've read say that, assuming a safe and effective vaccine is developed, the earliest time when enough doses could be available to make an impact on the general population is mid- to late 2021. Nevertheless, don't be surprised to see a "mission accomplished" announcement about a vaccine before the election, pushed prematurely by those seeking profits, fame and election victories. Sadly, releasing a vaccine that is not effective, or only modestly effective, or worse yet, dangerous, would have devastating long-term effects. If vaccinated people mistakenly believe they are safe and stop practicing safety measures the virus will wreak havoc, and then confidence in vaccines and science would be seriously harmed as the pandemic rages.

I don't understand how vaccines in this case are supposed to work at all.

  • Some people have relatively compromised immune systems through one or more factors: Diet/lifestyle, stress, age, environmental toxins, poverty (lack of access to health care) genetics, and/or pre-existing diseases affecting the immune system.
  • Along comes a virus that specifically targets those with any of the above factors. In other words, it attacks those with a compromised immune system.
  • It does not attack those with healthy immune systems or the immune systems fight it off with no real noticeable problems. Or the % of folks with healthy immune systems that get seriously ill is too small to generate a threat to the healthcare system and therefore not worthy of a public health care response (ie. vaccine development)
  • A vaccine gets developed which functions by stimulating the immune system to fight off the disease, thereby overstimulating the immune systems in healthy people and stimulating what doesn't function correctly in unhealthy people.
  • Question: Somehow the vaccine is supposed to force an unhealthy and poorly functioning immune system to suddenly start working without changing, treating or curing any of the factors that are causative for poor immune system function. How is this supposed to happen, magic?
  • Conclusion: Without altering the conditions which cause compromises in immune systems to start with, we are going to make very little progress in relation to Covid 19 or any of the other pandemics waiting to happen. WE HAVE TO CHANGE OUR LIFESTYLE BOTH INDIVIDUALLY AND COLLECTIVELY. That is the lesson of all of these viruses. Don't blame the messenger. The viruses are trying to teach us something. Developing a vaccine will teach us nothing.

In response to the OP, I think the schedule change helps Cal quite a bit.
While Cal will probably still lose to USC and Oregon.
Our chances against all of the other teams either improves or stays the same.
There is one factor which works against Cal in terms of conference play, though, and that is the loss of non-conference play. Cal is rolling out a new offense and new offensive coaches. That usually takes a few weeks to iron out. In fact, it can take an entire year to really kick in. The other factor working against Cal is midterms. Historically Cal has not done so well during midterm weeks, which is usually early to mid October.

The fact that Cal is now playing most of their tougher opponents early in the year or during those early weeks in October could be a factor in their performance this season.

We will see. I am optimistic that Cal will have at least a .500 winning percentage in conference play for the first time in over a decade.

Wrong. In real estate, it is location, location, location, location. In medicine, it is science, science, science.

Immunocompromised people are a small fraction of those at high risk. In fact, what is often observed in people who get the sickest when infected with this virus is an overactive immune response with a tremendous amount of inflammation being a major factor in their sickness. A vaccine is meant to sensitize the immune system to the virus so it can never establish a beachhead in your body. You might read this article about the range of problems the virus causes in the body: https://www.ucsf.edu/magazine/covid-body

We'll see, every team faces the challenge of no OOC games to prep.
In recent years, Cal has relied on the defense to keep the team competitive in games.
Playing SC with no crowd noise in an empty Coliseum might be helpful for the offense.
