  • It's a freakin 9 am start, which is ridiculous
  • UCLA has a one week advantage
  • Cal has no DL due to covid.

Conclusion, this game and this season is a joke, Cal needs to view this as a glorified practice, learn from the process and ignore the outcome.

Tackling better improve next week and Garbers needs to also.

All that matters now is winning the Big Game. I'd be fine if every other game gets canceled from here on out.

Correction: all that matters now is not losing the Big Game.

Well...if we're talking about winning a Rose Bowl...you can call it 84 years and counting. I already pushed us ahead to 2022, just because you know.

Both teams had a 9am start. One of those teams showed up to play.

Coronavirus doesn't explain the poor offense, LBs, etc.

Granted, UCLA had a bit more experience, but Cal is more talented and experienced - they could run, throw, catch, block and tackle last year (or in HS, or the previous college). I still expect better than this.

If this game had come down to missed assignments or being out-schemed, I'd forgive the Bears for losing a close one. Instead they got straight-up blown out on both sides of the ball. There was nothing fancy going on - UCLA just lined up and ran over Cal, while Cal couldn't do anything on offense to speak of.

It's one thing if a less-talented team like Navy that relies heavily on scheme has a rough start. Everything about their offense and defense relies on timing and execution to make up for lack of size and talent. It's another when a very talented and experienced team simply cannot function and gets obliterated. Cal looked like Sac State. In fact, most of Cal's "C" game opponents have shown up with more than what we saw from Cal.

Yes, Coronavirus has made things very challenging for Cal and I'm prepared to toss out this season. But I also won't be surprised if Cal continues to look bad the rest of the year, and it could lead to some recruiting defections. It's not the end of the world, but it could be a significant setback.

The coaches failed the players, and the players failed themselves. Nobody who watched that game can say anyone on the Cal sideline gave 100% in that game. UCLA didn't give 100%, either, but they sure looked a lot more focused and motivated than a Cal team that was playing for the first time in almost a full year.

Bottom line, the coaches did a very poor job getting this team ready. Every other team in the country is facing challenges - some coaches have stepped up and some (like Harbaugh) have stepped in it instead. Harbaugh doesn't deserve a pass for failing to adapt to the situation and neither does Wilcox. This isn't fatal, but he and his staff should absolutely be looking in the mirror and figuring out what they're doing wrong. The players who have sacrificed so much deserve much better from this staff. And they deserve better than shrugs and excuses from fans.

I really hate those stupid slogans like "we're all in this together," because we're so not. Some people are using the virus as an excuse to celebrate being worthless, lazy, stoned couch potato losers, and if anything giving strong evidence of why God would put a virus like that on Earth in the first place; some (unfortunately, too few) are using this as a challenge to face the adversity, work harder and better themselves in spite of the situation - forcing themselves to go outside and out of their comfort zone and not accepting "good enough." You can see that on the field this year - some teams have kind of packed it in from the get go while others are finding opportunity. It's pretty clear from the words of the coaches and the actions on the field that Wilcox and Co didn't leverage adversity but instead decided to complain and make excuses. That's their failure.

Before the season started, I felt that in this year of stops and starts and last minute u-turns, it is all about keeping the players focused and properly prepared to meet whatever challenge awaits them. Obviously, Cal was neither focused nor prepared to play. That is 100% on the coaching staff. There is no excuse, not the change of opponent, not the time or day of the game, not the unavailability of a couple players, not the implementation of a new offensive system, the coaches simply dropped the ball. The good news is they have a chance to redeem themselves on Saturday (I think).

Still not enough to make me panic. We'll see what happens next week. Yes UCLA had challenges as well but Cal did not have a DL and they had to travel under last minute conditions while UCLA got to stay at home. Home field for a 9 am start at the last minute makes a huge difference. And that is what you saw, a huge difference.

Your comments were well thought out and appreciated reading them, but your passion seems to be more about your beliefs than the facts. You believe Cal will face-plant and maybe lose recruits. But you have no basis for that belief other than one quirky game that has every indication of being an outlier.

To a man, recruits are stating that they really believe the Cal program is on the rise and they are promising good things. Maybe they have a little more to go on then you do.

But, as I now recall, you have been one of Wilcox's more consistent critics. Am I wrong?

That a very accurate sentiment, but it's gotta eventually be backed up by results. Part of it was new coordinator hype, but if that doesn't pan out, well gotta find a new angle to sell. Because I can sure think of 175 ways (but no more than 175) that I would be negatively recruiting against Cal's offensive targets right now.

The rest of this season will serve as a sample size to validate our program's trajectory. Will just need to see how it plays out.

Keep in mind that many top programs nationally have had uncharacteristic face-plants this season while some lesser programs have had unusually good seasons. While covid impacts every team equally in theory, circumstantial evidence shows that covid disproportionally impacts the better programs. So Alabama is the same and tOSU, Oregon and Wisconsin remain undefeated with limited data to go on, but every other top program has face-planted or underperformed at times this season.

If folks are going to take one game as a reason to run, then Clemson, LSU, Georgia, Oklahoma, Michigan and Penn St. should be worried also. Somehow I don't think they are. In other words, recruits are smart enough to look around the country for perspective. If Cal was one of the few programs struggling this year, then they might jump ship. But Cal does not stand out in that way. So I would expect recruits to patiently wait out the next month or so before reaching their conclusions.

Do you think you will get the trifecta?
Rams are having a better year than last year and are tied for 1st place.
It would be easy to see the winner of the NFC west making it to the SB again like last season.
But they would have to deal with KC, Baltimore, Steelers, Titans or Buffalo.

Reserving any Real judgment until Saturday morning... like early 1st quarter signs of last week just being a fluke. Tired of the choke artistry. Sick of it. And isn't all on Wilcox or Dykes or Tedford. The support is here the desire and will ( better be)here just need to figure the keys necessary for success now like this week.
